I was just watching HSN and they said 1990 proof sets non silver have tripled in price the last two months, and theybought all of them on the market.

I bought 2 of those a couple years back. They must have gone up even more in all that time. Time to cash in, lol.

That would be if THEY were foolish enough to pay triple the price for the half dozen or so on ebay that week. lol
That would also mean that they are now worth what you had to pay to get them from the mint. They have been selling for half ($6 to $7) what the mint sold them for in 1990 ($11).

  6. Put them in ANACS slabs with some special 22nd anniversary labels and you really got something there. TC

HSN is just trying to justify their ridiculously overpriced coins. softmentor is correct - they sell for less than the original cost from the mint.

Someone forgot to mention this to eBay sellers as the 1990 proof sets are selling for around $8 on the Bay.

The coin merchants at HSN ar GODS! As such we should pay homage by purchasing their many products for at least triple their atcual value.

Sorry I just couldn't resist the sarcasm and it's not directed at the original poster, it's towards HSN's pricing. HSN really over prices their coins. I don't think that I've ever seen a good deal on that show.

Oh, I guess they are numismatic experts. Guess they don't know that 3 X nothing= nothing. :) Not putting down 1990 proof sets, but really now! HSN really is in space city!

    Hello bkozak33,

Were you watching the HSN for the entertainment value or were you actually shopping for coins there?

Not that HSN is not mostly hype, but they may be going up as Coin World reported this week that a rare doubled die quarter can be found in the regular and prestige proof sets.

Can tell us more about the doubled die and maybe describe a pick-up-point?

I just scanned the article, but I believe it mentioned the best way to identify it is the doubled "S" mint mark. Unlike business strikes, proof mint marks are not added later, so a DD proof could show a doubled mint mark.

If that's the case, the coin shows could sell them as "unsearched" 90s proof sets - buy them and look for the DD quarter!
