What i have here is 2 1882cc. The top one is graded ms63 and the bottom on is graded ms64. My question is what is keeping the 63 from going to a 64. From what i see they both look like they have pretty much the same hits. I'm sure I am missing something. These ms grades are kinda tough for me. One little thing can make or break a grade. Would like to get some imput from others as to what the differences are that make these 2 different grades. Thanks for the help.
Probably just the opinion of the grader. Seriously though the one in the dark holder looks a little more 'baggy' than the one in the light holder. Bone
I will have to agree with you both on that. I thought that the 1st one was just as good as the 2nd one. I guess it could go either way. The 2nd one could be overgraded. But what do I know. Thanks for your opinions. I have the one on the left. Didn't know if a 64 was pushing it a bit. Thanks
Well it is hard to say that both coins have the same marks when they don't have the same background in the photo....when you take a photo with WHITE you are going to get a photo that won't look the same if the background is BLACK or any other color.... Speedy
If I understand you correctly, the one in the white holder is the 63. IMO the reason for this is the large hit in front of the chin. That's the primary difference.
My humble opinion... The one in the white holder has less hits than the one in the black holder BUT the one in the black holder has more detail above the ear... I would grade them both MS63 but would rather own the one in the white holder. Ben :smile
Hey speedy could you explain to me the different effects that the background colors have on the coins. Does it have something to do with the light being absorbed around the coin? Not to much of a photo guru. Thanks GD, the one on the left is the 63. If the hit was not in the prime focal area and lets say was behind the head at 3 oclock would that make any difference in the grade in your opinion? The grades below ms are pretty much cut and dry but the ms grades can be confusing at times. Guess thats why it takes so long to learn the grading. Thanks
I'm not too sure about how it works but I know that if you change the background sometimes the coin shows up better....I've heard that sometimes pink works better for copper coins while red works best for gold and black for silver.... This could be all wrong but this is what I've read and heard other long time collectors say. Speedy
