Well I enjoy collecting US coins by type... but there's only so many US coins I can collect before they all start looking the same, lol, so I had to vote worlds coins... though US coins are a close second for me. Nothing against US coins, but it quickly gets to the point where I have as many types as I possibly can have before expanding my collection gets significantly more expensive. World coins I can collect tons of varieties cheaply and will never run out of different types to collect. Still, I'm a big fan of both.
I collect just about everything and it all brings a great deal of enjoyment. It'd difficult to single anything out but if forced then it's probably things that are "local" to me in time and space. ...Tokens from around this area especially if it's issued by a friend or someone I know, modern US coins that can be found in circulation, Century of Progress tokens and medals from the Chicago world's fair, telephone tokens (most were issued in Illinois, Indiana transportation tokens. Really anything that I don't already have is just great with me.
I've always enjoyed collecting complete sets of US coins, proof sets and the occasional US coin that catches my eye, although I do own some world coinage, I'm really not a big fan of it.
I've never had the impulse or desire to complete a set of anything. Most of all, I like bargains. It's sort of a calculation of what you pay for what you get, and I don't mind having doubles or triples of anything. This approach has led me to collect an assortment of "stuff" including various types of silver coins, modern commemorative gold coins, a few world gold coins, and even the occasional $20 Liberty when a dealer didn't adjust his prices up fast enough. I'm fairly certain I could sell almost everything I own for substantially more than I paid for it, even after a dealer discount. I also have a small token collection that I'm thinking of expanding since everything else has gone up in price a lot over the past year.
Right now I have a half dollar fixation. They are easy to handle and see. Working on Franklin set and 3 sets of 64 to 85 Kennedys (one is complete). Started off with Walking Libertys but they are just too expensive in high grades so I quit that.
Im working on a set of Franklins right now myself and I'm trying to do the entire set in BU, needless to say its going slow and somewhat expensive for some dates. I like Walkers also but I agree with you that some of them are very expensive in high grades, thats why I'll stick to VF when I start mine.
At a coin show early this month I looked at a few 1955 Franklins. One was $32.50 and he reduced it to $25.00 but I still passed on it. This hurdle must be jumped. I have to bite the bullet and buy a 1955. Once that key is purchased the rest will go easier. In PA do you get many Denver mint marked coins?
OH’YEAH “willy-nilly“ for the win! I’ve only completed on set, Roosevelt dimes. Now I’ve lost most of my interest in all US coin. I look for any BU world coin that catches my eye, nice looking world or ancient that are in my budget. I feel that I’m getting a better value. While I now buy fewer coins I do much more research.
I think we get a decent amount of Denver coins here, more than I would have ever thought but certainly more from Philadelphia.
Us I collect mainly US coins. I am trying to complete a Morgan dollar set (will probably have to pass on the really high dollar coins). My problem is, so many other coins catch my eye I end up with a little of this and a little of that! So many coins, so little time.:rolling:
I'm just a collector of everything. Due to medical reasons I am cutting down on stuff to collect. As to coins I collect individual coins, type sets, albums, proof sets, uncirc sets in USA type coins. I have boxes of foreign coins that I mostly have no idea of what they are. I've been putting them in 2x2's for many years. The type of work I used to do had people from all over the world and I would always ask if they had any coins from their country and usually they would jsut give them to me. By weight there is probably about a hundred pounds of them and as I said most of them I don't even know what they are. For some reason people in other countries do not put English wording on thier coins. You would think think they would be more considerate. However, I think what I like best is to try to complete an album. I have almost every Whitman Classic Album made and mostly they are all full. Example is 10 sets of Lincolns, 8 sets of Mercury Dimes, etc., etc. However, I don't stop at coins. I collect stamps, flashlights, cameras and camera equipment, knives, swords, spears, blow guns, archery items, Lincoln Logs, outdoor windmills, concrete rabbits for my yard, etc. I'm just a collector like a pack rat.
Ya know, it's been an interesting ride for me. My father passed away in 2001 - on Memorial Day. He was a WW II veteran, and served this nation in the US Navy at New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, and Iwo Jima. I lost Mom 2 years later, almost to the day. I noticed during those years I was very nostalgic, and that's why I returned to coin collecting. These days, I can afford things which were out of the question on a paper boy's income ! And ya know what I've done ? I've put together what I call "heritage sets" - date sets for the birth year of a loved one. 1923 for Dad, and 1928 for Mom. Since there aren't many pieces in a set like that, I can go for better grades - I think very highly of my folks. peace, everybody...
