How on earth is this coin not cleaned?

    I am certain that coin was in some type of cardboard holder held by tape.

    I would guess that as well. A lot more common that you think, and a fairly large reason coins were dipped in the 70's.

    Looks like end of roll toning to me - no tape.

    Also very possible. Basically something was covering the areas that are not toned. I suppose if it was tape, it might have left glue residue behind.

    How would you only dip part of one side???

    Dip can be applied to only a certain area if you are careful and steady. :p

    In this thread, I did only one side, but the same principle applies. On a large silver dollar like the Peace dollar, it wouldn't be too difficult. Although, straight lines would not be an easy thing.

    I have a 1928 peace that has a big "x" across it from marks that look like tape as well but no residue.
