Got this today. 1981 $5 star note from a run of 640k. I'm pretty new to paper money, but I think it is in great condition for it's age for sure. Someone must have brought this in after stashing it away for awhile because they paid in four old fives all from 1977-1981, all in really good condition. Looks to be almost uncirculated except that it bends in the middle due to someone having it in their wallet (although there is no crease). I have very limited experience and knowledge of paper money, so what do you guys think about the value of this note? I'll probably keep it but just curious as to what it might be worth, and what someone might pay for it (often different!). Or if you'd just like to tell me what you think about the note I'd love to hear that too! IMAG0318.jpg

I dont see why star notes sell for a premium. I would say its worth 10 bucks

Got it from this site, http://mycurrencycollection.com/reference/stars/5. Is the site you posted a list of star notes? Thought I was reading chart correctly..could be wrong. Thanks for the input!

If you look at the very bottom of your chart it says there are 768,000 "F" star notes. my chart lists 640,000 in the first run and 128,000 for the second run, so I believe I am correct with 640,000..

You are correct. That is a great find. I am willing to bet the person who used it to buy something with is not the same person who took care of it for the last 30 years. What did the other 3 bills look like? Did you keep them as well?

Is it just me or does the date on the bill look like "1961" instead of "1981"?

No, and the signatures are Buchanan - Regan from Series 1981.

Star notes are usually about 1% of the total notes printed for the series. In this case .75% (less than 1%), so finding them is rare, especially when they are over 30 years old. In AU I would guess this note is worth approx. $40-$50. This note is uncirculated, and worth about double that.

    ....and some series cousins,

I always hear about people finding star notes and saying their valuable. I rarely hear people paying much for them. They dont sell for much on ebay. what am i missing?

I did keep the other three, two 81's and one 77A. They are in similar condition, although I would say the star note was in the best condition of the four.

Clay....that is awesome! Was that a find or a purchase? Either way, I'm jealous.
