I have a few IHCs that I think might be proofs that are in MS NGC holders. Sometimes these are tough to tell apart, but one of them (1880 MS63BN) I have attributed the obverse to Snow's PF-3 (Repunched 1). In his attribution guide, he states that there are no known Circulation strikes for this variety. Does anyone else have an example of a proof cent that has been graded as MS? I will get some pics up later.
I have heard of it happening. However, if you have a (possibly) unique unc, that would be even better
Here are a few pics......another thing Richard Snow references in his guide is there is are purple toned proofs that are often designated in a BN holder.....this coin is bright purple. It does not have cameo fields though which is throwing me off!
not reflective at all....I have IHC proofs that are graded, and the surfaces don't look the same. There is a wide range of reflectivity on IHC proofs and the toning might be hiding the surface reflectivity. Maybe its a circ strike, which would be cool!
I am actually glad its not a proof now.....If this is the only known repunched date using the same die as Snow's PF-3, this could be scarcer than the proof itself! Snow had a 2* rating on the proof. Thanks for the input!
You might want to send it in to him for examination. If it is a new variety, I'm sure he'd love to attribute it and he'd probably put his "eagle eye" sticker on it if it meets the grade, which I think is kind of like CAC.
