Does it make sense to buy multiples of the same coin just because its a key or semi-key date? Just recently I bought a 1921 Peace Dollar and now my lcs has another one. Its about the same condition and the price will be similar if not exactly the same. I mean this is not a five dollar coin, its going to cost around a hundred or so. I'm really tempted to pick it up if its still there the next time I go.
Theres nothing wrong with buying multiples of the same coin, if you want to buy it and youll be happy, then buy it.
It is really up to you and depends on your collecting goals. I do not buy multiples of a key or semi-key unless it is an upgrade or has better eye appeal. If the new 1921 Peace is not an upgrade, why not save up and wait to buy a 1928 Peace? TC
i think if it was an upgrade piece or it was something i was planning to sell i would get it. i usually sell everything i get doubles of. just my .02
Heck, I think I have 12 or so 1944 Philly Mercury dimes, trying to make a grade set like one of the collectors here did with their 1908-S IHCs.
I'm thinking of coins like the way I collect baseball cards and comics. When an item has potential you buy multiples, sometimes ten to twenty of the same exact item. When its time to resell, you usually make a killing on the profit. Is this the wrong way to think about coin collecting?
If I like a coin and the price is right I'll buy it, even if I already have one. I have many multiples, and I don't regret buying any of them. If you know what you are doing and are satisfied with the results, what's the problem?
Nothing wrong with that. When I had my complete Morgan series back a number of years ago, I had many duplicates and triplicates. If you like a coin, why not have more than one example of it. 1921 Peace Dollars are a great coin to own. I had two of them once at the same time.
I am guilty of buying up multiple coins of the same date/grade. I have 9 or 10 PCGS ms66 1938 D buffalos and I buy them anytime I can pick one up at a good price. It's a common coin in a slightly better grade but one day they may be worth something.
Many reason's do do this. A grading set Upgraded coins for sets And my favorite, it's a date/mm you want to hoard, like 32s quarters
Absolutely nothing wrong with multiples of a certain coin, Coin Collecting is first and foremost about enjoyment of a hobby. How you enjoy your hobby is at,more times than not a Very Individual Thing. I personally have a thing for 1883 no cents Liberty Nickels. Can not seem to pass them up. Also my collection of 1971 P&D and 1972 P&D Eisenhower Dollars borders on a case of OCD with multiples getting around a hundred or more. Each of these coins is very unique to me with different die markers, hits and varieties. Terry
I have many multiples of certain years/mints I like. I have around 25 1909 VDB's including a grade set from G to MS65. I also have almost a full roll of 1960 small date Lincolns in BU. For some other years I couldn't decide between two coins because I like them both so I kept both.
I have something like 20 doubles in my OGH merc dimes hoard... it's whatever... Collect what you want!
