My dad ordered $5 face silver from APMEX a few days ago when it was slightly down. It came last night in quarters.(He asked for dimes) There were 10 Standing Libertys, and 2 were Type 1's. All the liberties appeared to have no date. I looked at the quarters under a desk lamp and loupe. To my surprise, a T1 had a small rise where the 4th digit of the date should be. I held the quarter under a more powerful loupe and the 4th digit turned out to be a 6. I called in my dad to show him my discovery. He was very surprised. He put the quarter in his Dansco album. In return for finding it, he let me take some Washingtons for my Whitman folder. I'll try to get pics on later if he'll let me.

Thats awesome! 2 years ago I got an 1860-S Seated Liberty quarter in junk silver. It was probably an FR-2. But like your Standing Lib, there were only 56,000 minted for that issue. I recently sold it for $229.00. Not bad for a $3 investment! I wanted to keep it but I'm putting that money towards something else...maybe a GSA morgan or some gold bullion.
Wow, what an awesome story! Truly one in billion chance of that ever happening, and you are the lucky ONE!
I agree, both of the quarters you posted are 1917. http://www.thecoinlook.com/1916slq.htm Still a cool story though...but not as happy of an ending after all.
At least (or so I hope) this all was a good learning experience. I am sorry the coin is not what you and your father had hoped.
