What is your preferred range of condition, in terms of what you collect? Do you like only MS/PF coins? Or do you prefer circulated coins that are older, and have more of a history? Please feel free to be very specific.

As my addy and comments suggest, I have always loved Morgan dollars, but as some folks know, have gone to collecting more modern stuff--Franklins, Modern commems, and other halves. Generally, I go for MS 63 as a baseline, and prefer MS 65 or above for business strike. For modern proofs, I like either minty fresh (in original box), or PF/PR 70s. Your turn.

What's affordable and in a reasonable condition basically - no point trying to pursue the perfect coin if it costs 10x more than a couple of grades below. I have no problem buying damaged coins as long as the price is right. Condition range is basically all over the place but there's one thing that I'm never a fan of, which is bright red copper - just tones no matter how hard I try to preserve it, hence I'll leave it to the experts. I'll upgrade along the way and sell off lower grade ones.

For the 3 series I am collecting, Franklins, Silver Roosies and War year Mercs, I am in the uncirculated conditions. Probably MS-60 at the lowest.

Then there is the junk silver and bullion rounds. I prefer the bullion to be minty fresh but if it is an interesting round, I can accept a little lower grade.

Modern commems I want them in their original mint packaging w/coa. Same with the prestige and proof sets.

My 11 year old just started a Jefferson nickel folder. It is being done out of circulation in the nicest coins possible.

Depends on too many things, it's going to range from AG - MS and then Proofs are collected as well at times. I collect all types of coins and grades.

I didn't vote since I have way too many collections of different timeframes. Basically, I would have chosen "all of the above except modern ultra high grade". I have some, but don't care what the grade is at all.

I love good condition coins, like we all do, but simply don't obsess about it. Maybe its because I don't limit myself to a tiny little population to collect. No human can probably ever assemble a complete US collection again, and I collect coins from all over the world and all time frames, so "completeness" is never even a remote possibility, so I collect what I like. I have AG large cents, vg Ostrogothic coins, VF roman republican, AU CB and SL halves, and BU morgans, type, etc.

Buy what you can afford and pleases you. That is my motto.

If you wanted an answer just for my US coins, for most of mine I loved AU, (back before they started slabbing them BU). I thought a nice AU55 or 58 was a great compromise of price versus detail, with me sometimes going with a really nice XF if it had nice eye appeal.

I love high high AUs. Best bang for your buck and for the most part very attractive.

  8. F-VF for coins older than 1916. But I like Walkers and Franks well worn as well.

I don't pay much attention to numerical grades so my collecting is all over the place. If I had to guess, I'd say most of what I collect is in the VF-XF range, mostly because to collect to any degree in what I like in higher grades would not be possible, regardless of wealth.

Both my registry collection and Dansco collection of Jefferson Nickels fall into the MS65-MS67 category. All of my other coins are for sale so I don't really consider them part of my collection but most of them would fall into the MS63-MS65 range.

Proof 65-68 of classic and modern coins. I will consider Proof 68+ of modern coins depending on the specimen or price. If no Proof has been released I'll settle for EF/AU/MS+ as much as I can afford, especially key dates and low mintages.

The first half of my life was spent collecting circulated (some well) pieces; the latter half of my life I want to go out full throttle.

I love Franklins, but they are quite rare (and expensive sometimes) in high grades (66-67), therefore I stay in the 64-65 range. For my cent collection, I try to find the best possible coins (67-68). Since none of my collection is slabbed, the grading is done by me

So many options I collect. I guess I'll chose the one that applies most. F-12-VF35

The lowest possible grade available... just need to read the date, so g-vg range.

I am all over the map, I buy what I like and sometimes what I like is a ms-69 modern, and sometimes it is a g-4, I am trying to keep my indian head cents all at least xf. but some of my collection comes from junque silver, and barbers in mid grades are rare in the junque silver

My collection as far as grades go is all over the place. Some coins I like them in MS and some in AU. Some type sets looks better in certain grades.

For the most part I collect MS Canadian coins, ranging from MS60-MS65 - most of them graded by the ultra-conservative ICCS.
My Roosevelt dimes are generally MS65 or better.
