I need a 1946 Australian penny for my collection. It is one of the rarest in the series, with 240,000 minted, and Krause lists it at $7.50 in F condition. I saw this listing on eBay and placed a bid. The seller says there's doubling on a few letters, but I don't care at all about errors and varieties so that means nothing to me. What does matter is that it is obviously cleaned and looks rather crappy in my opinion. I bid because it's rare but it would always be a filler for me. So I was really surprised to see that it sold for almost $22. Do you think this is because of the "error," or what's going on here? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...sspagename=STRK:MEDWX:IT&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
I dont know but it is interesting to see how demand really dictates the prices. If that was a US penny with that small of a mintage, then it would be thousands!
I agree with you on the mintages, but for countries with smaller populations they just don't make as many coins even in the normal years. The thing about this is that if it wasn't cleaned, I'd guess it would sell for somewhere between $5-$15, so the fact that it is clearly cleaned and sold for more than that is really surprising.
