Sales of the 2012 U.S. Mint Set began at 12:00 noon ET with pricing at $27.95, which is $4 less than similar annual sets issued in the two previous years. As has been the case since 2010, this year’s set features a total of 28 uncirculated coins. 14 of them are produced at the Denver Mint with the other 14 originating from the Philadelphia Mint — the same U.S. Mint facilities responsible for producing America’s circulating coinage.
But its up to the collectors to decide if they want to buy. The mint can produce a million items a year, its their business. But I don't really buy modern mint sets unless they're toned and cheap. However, I will still but the silver proof set.

Now heck dang Ruben, that's just dad blamed out o' control....... Been goin' on for years though......
But that includes the 5 Presidential coins being released this year, and the ATB quarters :thumb: and it's only double the proof set which contains 14 coins.
Let's see it has been 28 coins since 2007 I believe except in 2009 when it was 32 because of the extra cent and territory quarter designs. From 1999 to 2006 it was 20. The increase in 2007 was because of the four President dollar designs. In 1998 it was only 10 coins, so I guess it has been out of control for 13 years now.
I love mint sets and Proof sets, but I would have liked to see them finish messin' with quarters before they started the dollar series. Still, I get them every year. Don't forget the Nickle series, and 2009 were 36 coins. While I agree it seems excessive I find it no tribble a' 'tall.
Your right I forgot the nickel series and my count was off for 2009. Thanks for the correction, but I think I still made my point. It has been "out of control" for a LONG time.
Satin brnished matte finish - business finish - proof finish - I'm finished Yep. In 2009 there were 18 P mint coins & 18 D mint coins in the mint set. The mint sets included the nickel, dime, quarter, half AND five presidential dollars, five quarters, and four Lincoln cents. Those 36 coins were satin finish. My satin finish set from the mint looked terrible. In order to have one of each finish, you still needed to get those same 36 coins from the bank in business strike finish & 18 more in proof manufacture plus the silver proofs and then there was the native dollar, Abe dollar, Braille dollar & the gold spouse coins & ..... I gave up.
Collect89 sounds like you think the number of just plain coins is out of control too! I would agree. k.i.s.s. yea. I mean territories, yea, but now all the national parks too? What next all the planets, constellations and astronauts? I suspect as long as the mint is making a profit on all those varieties, they will keep going.
Why shouldn't they? NFN, but the eagle reverse on the Washington was a bit boring to look at after all those years. Needed a change.
