I'm trying to persuade my dad to get his 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter graded. It looks about VG8 or VG10, in about the same shape as the one pictured below I found on slqs.com: I've never sent a coin off for grading, so I want to know which grading company, in your opinion, is the best for this type of coin. All opinions are welcome.
This war is already in progress! Read more: http://www.cointalk.com/t206022/#ixzz1vYipLrAk Have fun, it will be a book pretty soon.
You can get a good opinion of grade and if the coin has been cleaned or doctored here before submission. I highly recommend it if you have never submitted coins for grading before. Just post some pics.
Honestly, for a low grade circulated 1916 SLQ, authentication is much more important than grade and both TPG's have very similar standards in this grade range. I would trust the authentication of both companies for this coin. If I were you, I would choose the holder you like better.
There's a PCGS authorized dealer about 50 miles from my house, and it's cheaper than NGC, so if we get it graded, we'll probably go with PCGS. I also like the holder.
I cant see why either would be better. When its graded its more of an opinion of the person or persons that grade it. Ive read many times on blogs where members would crack out a coin that was graded low to send it to another company that gave it a better grade. That alone should tell you that the grade you get comes from someone that is taught to grade your coin by the gradeing habits taught by that company. To get an idea about this take your best coin spend one hour and grade it write down what is good about the coin and then keep your work. In about two months take out the same coin and regrade it and compare your work. You are human it will never be a perfect match. I never think the human eye sees anything alike twice.
Awwww, let him at least taste the Kool-Aid, Paul. For the OP, there is an interesting missal going on this thread: http://www.cointalk.com/t206022/#ixzz1vYipLrAk Bring your beach chair and a good novel for this one.
True, both are fine and market acceptable. If you put a gun to my head, I would choose PCGS. It seems there are some collectors who like NGC but accept PCGS, but some PCGS people only recognize PCGS. So, I would say PCGS all things being equal.
id say take it to whichever one is going to be easier for you. they have almost identical standards imo.. just my .02 cody
With my own experienced, The company grading company BEST is the one who can serve to the coin collectors to authenticate and grade the coin in public like COIN SHOW walk through while the customer is watching them without fearing the coin collectors will not a victim of coin switching. It takes only an average of 15 minutes to authenticate the coin and grade it IF the graders are professional experts. Now these days it is easy to them to grade new modern coin proof as Proof 69 or proof 70 without authenticate them. When I look all those video of TFG I do not see them wearing cotton gloves or handheld instrument or scale weigh to authenticate the coin/s. This is my own opinion. My self too I never shipped any coins to them for grading I rather BUY already slabbed much more cheaper than submitted it. But when it comes that you love the coin/s for sentimental value or very valuable you do not want to ship it for grading because of the chances might not reach in their offices or you will never received it back the same coin that what you sent it in.
Sorry but I think the OP is interested in getting his coin graded by a legit TPG, not ACG or that crap.
I think your BRAIN is not working very well today.. DID I EVER MENTIONED ACG? ACCUGRADE is not EXISTED ANYMORE after winning on the settlement againts the BIG 4 on his favor Mr. ALAN HAGER of ACG.
NGC is by far the best. The only time I would ever send a coin to the PCGS is if I was going to sell it. They overgrade, net grade problem coins that should be in a genuine holder, and are too commercial. Not to mention their slabs are faked a lot more often than NGC. Don't get me wrong, I own a couple PCGS slabbed coins, but I always prefer NGC.
______My point is, the OP seems more interested in getting their coin graded by a top tier grading company, not the "table graders" you speak so fondly of. Cotton gloves DO NOT mark the difference between good coin handling and bad. Coin graders at good TPGs don't use gloves because when wearing gloves your dexterity is greatly reduced. The last thing they want to do is drop the coin. I personally would not be worried about my coin being switched if sending to a decent company, but that's just my 2 cents. Now back to the thread topic. I would say PCGS and NGC are equal, but I think it just comes down to which holder you like better.
OP, May I ask why your "dad doesn't want to" post a photo? Regardless of his/your reasons, I do hope you have at least taken the time to verify that your coin does have the 1916 design and is not an altered 17 TyI. With all due respect, the chances of a genuine 16 being the only dated coin in a lot of ten no-dates (even having come from APMEX) seems mighty slim. A just-as-likely scenario would be that an altered coin was sold as scrap to APMEX and later sold to you. Please do not take this wrong.. I am only urging you to do your homework prior to submission, and not to rely only on a faint "6" as your identifier. I wish you the best.
