I picked this up yesterday, it is marked 999.9 fine it is slightly smaller in diameter than a us nickel and about as thick as a dime. It weighs 3.1 grams, and is proof-like[IMG][IMG] looking for any info I can get as to rarity, mintage, and value if any other than gold content.Any info,or a point in the right direction will be greatly appreciated. I have been able to find some info on a similar one with the apollo 11,but nothing on this one. Thanks in advance. Dennis

If your size is right it can't be gold. You say diameter of a nickel but thickness of a dime and a weight of 3.1 grams. A piece the thickness of a dime and the diameter of a DIME of 999.9 fine gold would weigh 4.56 grams. Thickness of a dime and diameter of a nickel it would weigh 6.4 grams. If it was 900 fine silver it would weigh 3.5 grams. Made of copper it would weigh 3.2 grams.

Thanks for the reply,I was getting worried that no one was going to.lol.I was a little off in my description,it is actually only about half the thickness of a dime. I compared it to a British half soverign, and it is very slightly larger in diameter, but even thinner than that. Also, since my original post,I found someone with an electronic gold tester, but it apparently only measures up to 18k. The results were positive. But I've never seen this machine before. I have an acid test kit but I've been hesitant to scratch this thing, but I guess I'm gonna have to soon...

this coin was likely minted outside of the US by a private firm. The date is listed at 19.11.1969 which is a european convention rather than the American 11.19.1969. Otherwise I have no clue other than to say it is not a coin but a medal of some sort with little or no intrinsic value (it looks more like copper) and no face value.

Yea,I knew it wasn't a coin, but thanks for the heads up on the European thing. I found the exact one online, but It was on home Herman coin forum, and I don't read German. On the plus side, I ran out of patience and did the acid test. It tested good at 22k wich OS the highest acid I have,so I'm sure that it is 9999 as marked :) thanks again for the response.....Dennis
