What are the Ideal Coins To Put Into a US Type Set?

About a year ago, I wrote an article in this space about Type Sets, and some of the considerations involved in putting them together. At a recent coin club meeting, I decided to talk a bit about some of the topics I had covered in the article, but beyond that, I decided to do a little bit of research to cover the question — what are the best coins to put into a type set?

I'd say all of the different types! Aside from that, in my opinion only, it depends on what you can afford. Having put a 7070 together (no gold) I can tell you not everything is going to be easy to get, or in some cases, not cheap in any grade (seated dollars for example). Some people have unlimited budget and only want to get the best of the best, or may only want toned examples of everything, so thats another way to do it. I'm putting together a 20th century type set (no gold) focusing on every coin in mint state, exactly like it came out of the mint (red indian, red cents, white coins, etc).

All this being said I think a type set is a very personal set. You can interpret them in as many ways as you can interpret a religious text, and each one tells a similar story, but just a little differently than any other version. So in all, the best coin to put into a type set? The one that will make you happy it's there!

I am doing a Dansco 7070 (no gold as of yet) in proof when available. This is a long term goal to say the least. If no proofs were made, I am trying to get a PL. The 21 Peace dollar has remained elusive.

This was the cheapest way to. I want my type set to be semi keys or keys those are usually coins that become more valuable and make the set more interesting to me.
