Why is this not slabbed

I'm always a bit suspicious when I see something like this for sale. I have no idea about pricing of these, but does it look like a problem coin?

What would be the advantage to slabbing that? It's not a rare or expensive piece.

 

From what I can see it looks to be an ok coin unless it was sent into a TPG and came back cleaned, but it would have to be a very old cleaning to get the grey like that. Its a terrible picture for sure, but I think I can see hints of the original luster coming through. I don't see why you wouldn't slab it, if for nothing else than to prove it wasn't a problem coin.

 

i dont see any problems that would cause it to be bodybagged. i prefer my coins to not be slabbed because i take them out and look at them. but thats just my preference..

 

Looks fairly original to me.

Makes me sad that now the conversation is "why is the coin NOT slabbed", rather than "why would you spend the money to ask someone else's opinion?". I don't mean anything by it Ruben, I understand the nature of your question, just commenting on where the US market has gone these last 20 years.

 

Scratch by the date could be the problem. Maybe it was slabbed at one time but who knows

 

i agree with you 100%, MM. No offense intended, Ruben, but in all but a small number of instances, slabbing has become nothing more than a money-making joke. I was pretty much finished with grading after I graduated from school. I'm just not sure, though, if people of my ilk are in the minority or the majority these days.

 

I know this ventures a little off the topic, but I'll agree about it being sad that we ask "why isn't it slabbed" even after I said what earlier, but it seems these days if you want a quick and easy resale on an older coin, many of which do indeed have problems, its almost necessary to get full price for it. If you're buying for permanent keeps, then in no way shape or form does grading do anything for you and I fall in line with what medoraman and treehugger said ( I have a type set that can attest to that), but if its about the buck, the guarantee usually helps the process.

 

In my experience I've been ripped off on unslabbed coins for failure to see what was wrong. Its not normal that these coins aren't attempted to be slabbed. it is more normal that an attempt was made and it was body bagged or whatever. Now maybe not, so I figured I'd ask someone who knows more than I do.... which is nearly everyone.

That actually looks like quite a nice coin. I see no problems in the photos that would preclude it from slabbing at NGC/PCGS.

The only reasons I can fathom that the coin isn't slabbed are (a) there's a problem we can't see in the photos, or (b) the coin is simply not valuable enough to warrant an investment in slabbing fees.

 

p.s. If you mean the field just left and below, the "chin" area is quite normal for this coin. It appears to be die wear/buckling and very typical, as I recall.

 

I understand sir, that is why I said I understood the nature of your post. Maybe "Do you guys see anything wrong with this coin?", rather than "why is this not slabbed?" would clear confusion.

 

So Mike, do you think that is a decent deal at $235. They are grading it AU55. I don't really know.
