Ok. May be a dumb question. I only use PMG for my notes to be graded but in Thailand they use PCGS Banknotes. But I see two different labels on eBay and other places. The green one that says PCGS Currency and has the statement a division of Collectors Universe and the one you see almost exclusively used in Thailand, the one that says PCGS Banknote. I am assuming they are two different companies and I understand the Thais use PCGS Banknote because it's much cheaper to have the notes graded than say PMG. So what's the difference between the two PCGS labels/companies?
For years PCGS was a name that CU had licensed to another company. Somewhere around 2-3 years ago (maybe a little longer) the license wasnt renewed and PCGS started grading paper in house again. There could have been a number of reasons for this as the former I believe still has a number of lawsuits pending against him and his new company. The banknote is the current PCGS company with the in house grading.
@baseball21 nailed it. Both holders are respected, but a lot of collectors with the older PCGS paper labels have resubmitted their older PCGS graded notes to PMG or the newer PCGS Banknote holders.
Yes, that is the current holder. Everything, including the label is protected by the Mylar plastic. The old PCGS holder had a paper label and the holder was not completely sealed.
I have many notes from the old PCGS ( Collectors universe ) The reason it went bully up, is simple absolutely no service, it was taking up to 6 months on the standard service to get your notes back much longer on economy ! PCGS Gold shield hasn't Been around that long, so I think value would be affected I have sent allot of my notes over to PMG to get reholdered, 95% of the time they come back the same as grading standards are similar, my suggestion is just send the new PCGS gold shield notes in to PMG. the PMG notes would demand more of a premium in my opinion. Similar to coins. PCGS holders go for more money then NGC and allot more then ICG, so the concept is similar here.
