Please guess the grade that PCGS assigned to this coin. As always, comments (both positive and negative) are welcome.

Looks like an excellent strike. Very few marks. I'd give it an MS66 , unless I'm missing something in the photos.

Hmm, very nice coin but it looks like it's been in the pocket or purse at some time in the past. How about AU-58.

I'll go MS-64. There are a couple of marks in Jefferson's hair and possibly on his jaw. Also on his collar. The reverse appears to have a mark between the C and the E in "MONTICELLO". Is that a mark under the V in "FIVE" (or does that have something to do with the variety)?

I would venture a MS63, looks like reverse of 1940 variety. Very willing to
    be wrong with photos :)

Hmmmm...I think MS65 but weakly struck

True, if it's been weakly struck then I've got to go higher, like MS-64.

If just weakly struck then I'd say MS64 to.

    PCGS MS-65 Reverse of 1938

My grade: AU-58 although if it is a Reverse of 1938 some of that lack of detail would be explained.

PCGS graded the coin MS 66. The variety, Reverse of '38, was correctly identified by several folks.

My thoughts on the coin are as follows:

The coin has great luster and is actually lightly rainbow colored which doesn't show in the photos well at all. The strike on the obverse is fairly good. The reverse strike is a bit weak centrally. There are a few nicks and taps on both sides, but none are in focus areas nor are they overly visible without magnification. Overall, I feel strongly that this coin deserves a 66.

Those of you who graded the coin lower, probably tried to grade the coin from the larger photos. I suggest that you get your grade by looking at the smaller photos, then see if the larger photos show any significant problems. Don't be fooled by nicks and taps visible in the huge photos.

    Have fun...Mike

I say ms-66, the mushy strike on the reverse esp the columns and the stairs keep it from getting any higher than that, beautiful toning however
