Since 1964 dated coins were minted well into 1965, are there errors of 1964 clad coins and 1965 silver coins? Inquiring minds want to know!
There are known and authenticated examples of '65 silver coins, '66 silver coins, and some claim even '67 silver coins. But I am not aware of any '67 that has been authenticated as of yet.
There are also a few 1964 clad coins too. All of these transitional errors are quite rare and expensive.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I was under the impression that 1966 was the last year for the production of 1964 coinage?
No they continued to produce them through 1966...but all silver coins (with the exception of errors) were dated 1964.
The one I found that needs to be authenticated yet is a 64 D Washington type C (clad die reverse) So we know there is at least that variety, and I keep hoping to find something else. But I check all the transitions. I weigh 83 Lincolns hoping for a copper one, etc. There seems to always be confusion when things change. And given the amount of coins produced by the mints, errors are gonna happen. Good luck with it.
You are exactly right, lyds. 1964 coinage was struck well into 1966 with normal dating resumed in 1967 and mint marks returned to coinage in 1968.
