I don't own any graded coins yet. I want to finally buy my first. So I am just curious what everybody's first graded buy was.
Mine was this Roosevelt dime graded 'Damaged: Scratched'. I am still having trouble finding the scratch.
Mine was a 1938-D MS-66 Buffalo nickel my wife bought me back in 1981 . I still have it in my Type set .
Of all of these slabs shown, I only bought the PF-67 Cent. I later bought a PF-64RB 1952 Lincoln cent. Making my slabbed coins to a number of 6 and only 2 purchased.
So, are you buying the slab or coin? Honestly, I'd say don't seek out a slabbed coin. Pick the coin and buy the one that appeals to you the most within your set budget for the coin. If it happens to already be graded, great, if it's raw, just as good. Buy the coin, not the slab.
My first one was an NGC MS63RB 1864 2 cent piece. I cracked it out of the holder, as I do all graded coins that I purchase (prefer to display them in air tites). Of course, a coin dealer friend of mine told me that I shoulda left it in the holder because it was overgraded. Oh well, I still like it.
My first graded coin was years ago, back when the TPGs first came into being. It was an 1888o Morgan dollar. If one likes Morgans, they are a good place to start with graded coins, as they are an extremely popular series, and lots of good examples of the common dates can be had for a reasonable amount of money. The 1880s, 1881s, combo is very common, and inexpensive for those two particular dates.
I started "buying" graded coins in 2001 when the 2001 Silver Buffalos came out. I bought some 2-pc sets from the Mint and then bought one each of the PCGS MS/PF69s. Sold 'em all a few years later...:hail: I starting "submitting" to PCGS in 2006 when the 2006 $50 Buffalos came out...pretty good luck so far...:thumb:
