Agreed. I just picked up one of each year, and present them adjacent to the modern commems. The one with the space shuttle is a little funky, but I like that, too.
I've taken big close ups of the rigging of the ship and the detail is fabulous, especially when considering the time period. If I'm not mistaken, although not intended, quit a few of these actually did circulate.
It was intended. These sold for a dollar each at the Chicago World's Fair (Columbian Expo). After the Fair was over, the unsold pieces were dumped into circulation.
I agree. Here's one that must have been stored in a leather pouch for many years. Nice shape with interesting toning. Lance. My bad. We were talking Columbians, not Pilgrims. Duh. Here's one. Lance.
Waves are something indeed. Just a hint in the modern statue of lib half and profound on the Mt Hood puck.
Looks like a proof ASE. I too, love Columbians. I want a nice MS65 or better example for my collection.
I've got four or five of them now, I think, all circulated. They're pretty cool even in lower grades, although Columbus loses his features pretty quickly. That dollar with the ship and shuttle on the reverse just reached right out and grabbed me. First time I ever actually sought out a commem.
