Is that a circulation strike nickel?? It looks like a proof to me, and I would grade it PF67. The FS designation is not given on proof Jeffersons as the assumption is that they should be full step. If it is indeed a proof, and it grades in the PF67 range, it is a $15 coin. If that is a business strike coin (which I don't think it is), then it's one of the strongest I have ever seen for a 1957. I'll wait for Lehigh to chime in...
Nice picts. Grading it? Stab in the dark, MS67, primary because I won't grade higher for a design I'm not completely familiar with
I don't think it's a proof. Otherwise why would he show the steps? I'm sure he knows a lot about nickels.
It is a business strike. It is the strongest strike I have ever seen for a 1957 as well. Lehigh has seen it and we both agree on the minimum it will grade. I was hoping to hear it from some others as well.
All I can say is WOW! I have never seen a 1957 nickel hammered like that. I think it's good for at least 5FS, but I just noticed the field above the Monticello Dome has a fingerprint...so I think the numerical grade would be limited to MS66 max. Beautiful example! Do you plan to actually have it graded? On another note, if you have a 1957 Proof Nickel, I would love to see close up images of the rims of both of these side by side. I can never tell from smallish pictures if it is a proof rim or circulation strike rim. I thought your pictures looked to have a very hard square rim. That coupled with the fact that 1957 nickels just are not struck like this one made me think it was for sure a proof.
Now everyone has me second guessing that it is a business strike. I am at work, so it's driving me crazy right now. I was 100% certain it was a business strike, even after Paul and I discussed it. But now I need to check it out again when I get home. I will grab a couple 57 proofs and take some comparison shots. If it is a business strike, it will be the first coin sent off to ngc by me, as I am not a slab kinda guy. I will have to find some friends to go along for the ride. I would also give it a acetone bath to remove the print.
I didn't mean to worry you. But, if that baby is a circulation strike, then man-almighty you have a great piece!!
Lol. too late! I wouldn't be too pleased if the first coin I sent in, out of my entire collection, was a 1957 Proof nickel. How ridiculous am I that I want to leave work right now to go investigate? lmao
I see no hits or nicks to speak of which means the issues that remain are strike issues. There are no windows or doors on the reverse at all and the obverse looks a little bit top me as being soft, but ... all Jefs look that way to me. Ruben
If it is a business strike, it will probably be the highest graded 1957 Jefferson in history: MS67 6FS
Wow! With a capitol "W" too. I'll say 67, as far as the steps go, I see no reason for the FS designation to not be on the label either. Nice coin :thumb:
I'm excited to see your close up images of the rim of the proof versus this one. The more I look at it I can't help that my initial gut feeling of it being a proof coin must be right. I hope I'm wrong for your sake, but I'm not feeling it....please, please prove me wrong with some pics!
