Who gets rolls from the bank?

What I do depends on what the bank's policy is about coins. I have an account at Wells-Fargo and they just machine count anything turned in, then sell those bags to the Fed. They won't sell you a full bag of coins. However, they will order boxes of halves from the Fed. So, I buy and sell coins with them, since I know I won't be getting any of the ones I just searched back and they don't really mind since they don't have to roll them.

Other banks, I only buy at, and most are happy to give me halves since they're just dead weight and there's little demand for them.

If a bank is unsure about giving me halves I make sure to stress that I _won't_ be bringing them back for them to deal with.

I used to get rolls of halves. But the banks don't seem to carry rolls anymore, at least around me. I've been to several banks with no luck for over a year now. They might have a few loose ones in the drawer that they are happy to dispose of, but there seems to be almost a coordinated effort to eliminate the half dollar from circulation. At least they act that way. So I don't do any roll-searching anymore.

Anyone know of any banks in FL that machine the coins brought in?

usually S is the mintmark with the lowest mintage. for dimes, it's W.

Really neat thread guys since we just started collecting the Kennedy's. By the way, I had no idea that a 1970d was all that rare. WHy, that's what I am, Born in Denver 1970! ;)

I have one bank that I buy boxes of halves from. $500 per box. At first they thought it was unusual that I would call and order a box of halves and if I get someone new, they are a bit confused, but the head teller knows me now and she just orders them for me. I get them right after payday. I go through them in one night. They are willing to order the boxes for me. I don't know if they are charged for them, but they don't ever charge me and they havn't said anything to me.

Then I take them back to another bank. I opened my acct there specifically because they had a coin counting machine that they don't charge for. Also they've got a branch at the grocery store and they're open 7 days/week. They get irritated, because their machine is not set up for a large quatity of halves. Under the machine the pennies, nickles, dimes, and quarters drop down into a large plastic bag. The halves, however, don't have a bag. They drop into a tray that only holds $100. Then they have to stop the machine and empty the tray into a bag. So it takes them probably 10 minutes to go through $1500 worth of halves. I try to go when they're not busy.

Hi, I am new to this and coins. Do you have to order the boxes of coins, mainly Quarters and Halves? Thanks, David

1983 halves aren't necessarily scarce, they're just hard to find in uncirculated condition and high grades.

And no, I don't buy rolls from banks as I don't roll search at all.

Edit: Oh my, I should pay attention to the date of the OP, this thread is an oldie! ;)

LOL, I guess it is an old OP but it caught my interest as many others have today. Hope to learn a lot from everyone.

You say no to buying rolls from banks, is it just something you don't like doing or is there a reason not to do it?

    Thank you! David

Don't have time and no desire to search by those means.
