1823 half dollar

    Looks as if my 1823 capped bust half has an altered date (was 1822 or 1828) but...it also seems to be a double strike on obverse, and I like that! Paid $250. Should I return it or keep it? Does the double strike add value even with the altered date?

    It sounds like your coin is probably a normal 1823 CBH. Varieties of 1823 CBHs include the 'Broken 3, the 'Patched 3' and the 'Ugly 3'. The 'Broken 3' carries a slight premium (a higher premium in higher grades) but the other two do not in lower grades. If you like the coin you should keep it. Personally I like anomalies like that. Please post photos so we can see what you have.

    Well said Hobo. I'll add that machine doubling was very common on the 1823. Example below. Not the same as being double struck. I also enjoy coins that are a bit different.
