I bought this 1877 Indian for $100, this scan is downright horrible as it actually looks pretty decent for what I paid... If I send it to PCGS I'm sure it wouldn't be graded, but would they at least holder it saying it's "genuine" or just sent it back?
Assuming that it is genuine, I would suspect it would be slabbed as genuine. Here are the PCGS guide line for slabbing http://www.pcgs.com/grades.html. About the only thing they will not slab are peeling lamination, PVC and not genuine. However, the will not slab it if they are unable to determine if it is genuine, but in that case, they do not charge you. I will bet you still have to pay the shipping. BTW, numeric grade costs as much as genuine.
Before PCGS used to just slab genuine coins "Genuine", now it is an option to get genuine with details grade. Like in your case, "AG Details - Surface Damage" It is just a check box item on the new forms and does not cost a cent more to get the details designation.
Thank you all... I don't think it was as good a "deal" as I originally thought (the coin) but it still might be fun to see what PCGS says - for $60....
Never heard PCGS charges extra fees for number grades compared to genuine labels. I think it's done under the same fee
The key would be they would have to be SURE it was a 77 versus another possible date. That would be the major limitation in my eyes of getting that in a slab.
I know they have "ways" of figuring it out... I am going to send it in just for the fun of it (I blow $60 in dumber ways) and see what happens. I'll let you all know of course...
If you can confirm it is a 1877, then I would recommend sending it to PCGS to have it confirmed as "genuine". If you can't, I suggest selling it on ebay and trying to sell your case to everyone online there.
I must be turning into a cranky old man. I find myself agreeing with GDJMSP much more often than I used to.
They would put it in a genuine holder and that would help the coin from continuing to accumlate corrosion from moisture in the air.
He's just saying that it's not worth the cost to get it in a genuine slab. I would use the cash to upgrade the coin.
Ehhh, no worries. It's just a progressive and contagious disease that affects young and old alike. Funny thing though, some people are immune to it. It's called knowledge
Well folks, the coin WILL NOT be going to PCGS... it is not an 1877... I am the proud owner of an 1897 Indian penny for $100!!! I guess the 'ol saying is true, if it sounds too good to be true - it probably is... .... guess now we'll see about the integrity of the gentleman from whom I purchased it.
Why is everyone so tough on Doug? Maybe I haven't been around long enough to get one of his patented "you are dead wrong" sort of posts, but I usually find his posts to be useful information for the OP. Sometimes people just don't want to hear the truth. And no, there isn't any brown on my nose.
