So, I went to the bank today to get some rolls of coins to go through and look for coins to keep. I was hoping to get the old and circulated coins like I did last time, but they gave me $8 worth of brand new 2012 pennies. So my question is, should I hang on to them and look for errors like usual or should I just go to another branch and trade them for circulated pennies? not sure what to do here, they all look so nice, I just don't know what the right move here is. I have my latex gloves on even touching the 1 roll I opened. Thank you in advance for your help. Kyle
The right move is whatever you decide to do with them, in the end, its all up to you. If you want to keep them, do it, if you don't, don't.
May I ask which bank you went to? I would love to get ahold of a roll of 2012s. I definitely don't want to pay ebay prices for one though.
I went to Bank of America here in Wichita, KS. I was surprised that they gave them to me, just yesterday, the guy told me they had not gotten NEW pennies in almost a year.
I have been looking at them and I think I found a number of them with a die crack on the forehead, I know... I am totaly new to this coin collecting and I am in NO WAY qualified to determine if something is a die crack, but it makes sense to me. It seems to be a thin line of a raised ridge, and since the die is what presses it, a die crack or scratch would cause that. Anyway, just thought it was interesting.
Guess you got lucky then, huh? I just started hunting and had some decent luck at a Citizens in Lansing. I wonder if larger cities have better luck or small towns. If I were you, I would keep a few just to have them. I'm just a novice collector, but I would imagine that they'll be worth something in the future.
Yeah, I have 1 roll I opened up and put 20 of them directly into holders and into a sheet for my binder, and I'm looking through the rest from that roll, I have 15 other rolls, I'll probably keep like 5 of them intact and unopened and then maybe just trade the others in for circulated coins, that is where I'll find the coins I am after.
Pennies and dimes are coming through in droves here. The local Walmart got them in so now they are everywhere. Got a nickel from my sister's change after her trip to Florida as well. If I were you, I'd check them for errors then spend them. Maybe hang on to a roll or two but there will be more than enough made to keep them from being valuable in, oh, say the next 100 years.
I have seen no black spots, they all seem nice and shiny and clean. It is probably pointless that I put 20 in holders and in a plastic sheet, but hey, who knows, maybe someday in 200 years my grandchildren's grandchildren will still have them and they will be worth 30 cents or so.
I like them, the mint did a lot better this year with the quality of their coins.....looking forward to receiving one!
Although my experience with the new shield cents is low (an occasional cursory glance), I have found them to be surprisingly clear of spots. Night and day compared to the 2009 issues. WalMart should have all you would ever need.
When this happens to me I see it as a great opportunity to cherrypick for ultra gems. I usually get a tube and start filling it with the best coins I can find....the rest I send back into circ.
When this happened to me with the 2011s I just kept one unopened roll and searched the rest of them for errors and some without to many contact marks or those black spots.
If you can do it early enough, you can usually sell singles and rolls on eBay. By early I mean before they are everywhere. I'd list a roll and a couple singles and see what happens.
