No car = no searching for me today. Got my car back tonight though! Buuut... gotta go into the office in Malvern tomorrow because I'm interviewing for a promotion. Bah, no roll searching for me until tomorrow night at the earliest.

Haven't posted in awhile. Getting nice outside around here, so been busy with the kids. Anyhow, gotten real slow for me. Dimes have pretty much dried up. Been through several boxes and found nothing. Halves have been no better. Didn't find anything last week and two 40% and a Jesus token from four boxes this week. Frankly, I have happy to get those 40% considering how difficult its been to find anything. Maybe if I say my prayers and rub the token my luck will improve...

Seems like everyone is having a dry couple of weeks :(

Is it just me, or does it feel like reading everyone's (or my own) results, that there are "phases" in which everyone seems to find more silver, followed by dry phases?

I know we discussed this in the beginning of the year, that people surmised that a lot of silver enters circulation around the holidays as people cash in change to pay for christmas gifts (and thus ends up in rolled change some time in january). I would guess that even though things are slow now, that we'd start to see our finds ramping up a bit towards the end of May as people start to clean out their houses now that the weather is getting warmer.

It's just a theory of course, but I think there's probably some truth to it. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

2 more boxes of cents: nothing interesting other than common wheats and copper memorials.

Just wondering, has anyone EVER found a steel wheat in a BWR? I've gone through probably 40-50 boxes now and haven't found a single one. :(

    Since my last post:

    I finished my $1000 bag of dimes: 3 Roosies (64 x2, 59)
    1 box halves: Skunk
    2 BWR halves: Skunk
    $8 loose halves: 1 1968

I also found 1 2012 P dime in the bag to fill the Dansco hole. :)

I found a steel cent once, in the same roll I found quite a few other wheat cents and a (rather skanky) 2000 WAM.

Thanks everyone! Persistence eventually pays off in this hobby! Unfortunately we have to sell it; at least it's going to find a better home than the bank was going to give it! (If you're interested, check it out!)

I found a steelie in a BWR once, no clue how it got there.

Off to dump and get my first boxes in a few days. Sticking the needle back into my arm...

Hiya all- Finally got a day to do some hunting, while i found no huge scores i was thrilled that all six of the boxes i picked up had silver, I mentioned earlier that loomis runs this town so it was quite a surprised that 1 box of dimes was from strings and sons while both my half boxes were from brinks even though i used my three main pick up banks.
    Results:
strings and sons dimes-1964 and 1959 roosie
    Loomis dimes- 1960 roosie
Loomis dimes- 1964 and 1963 roosie
    Loomis dimes- 1954 roosie
    brinks halves-1 64 kennedy 2 1967's
    brinks halves- a 65 and 2 69's
Now that i had those boxes it's a rotten shame the next day i can pick up any boxes isnt until tuesday as my work schedule wont permit. I manage a shell gas station so silver certainly isnt out of the question this weekend though. on Tuesday i spotted a guy 41 cents so he could buy his smokes when i saw him pull out a 64 kennedy to pay for them. he couldve bought a couple packs with that coin alone but alas his ignorance is my gain! Ill see you all next week!

$500 coin counter bag of dimes, results about my average: 2x '64 roosies (one with a really dark coloration I had some trouble capturing) and a '67 canadian 50%/80%.

    IMG_2405.jpg IMG_2404.jpg IMG_2406.jpg

I also found an additional source of $500 coin counter dime bags, so I'll be picking one up tomorrow. I have high hopes for this branch's bags. The first branch's bags are made up primarily of business deposits - it has a coin counter in the lobby. I talked to them about the lobby counter bags, but they told me it rejects everything non-standard, which I believe - when I dump coins here it rejects everything foreign and anything even slightly mutilated. I think (but do not know for certain) that it rejects silver as well. The behind-the-line counter is much more forgiving - I regularly get $5 in canadian and other odd foreign coins in addition to silver and the occasional button or token.

The new branch has only a behind-the-line coin counter, the same type as at the first branch, so I should be able to score if someone dumps grandpa's coin collection.

    EDIT:

A shot showing the toning better:

    IMG_2410.jpg

    EDIT 2:

I believe the '67 canadian is an 80% based on how it rings in comparison to a known 80% canadian and a known 50% canadian, but who knows...

Did my second box of dimes only one silver roosies. My last box from the same credit union had 2 mercury dimes and two silver roosies. I was told by them they would not order any other boxes after this one.

Personal best! After 1 65 in the previous 7 boxes of halves we hit the jackpot. Dropped a box and picked up at our fave bank. Coins were ready and I drove home. We search in our garage. I set the box on the table and Always a Lady opens coin roll hunting 5-10-12 003.jpg coin roll hunting 5-10-12 014.jpg coin roll hunting 5-10-12 011.jpg it up. We always scan for enders. Out pops a 1949 Bender. I asked to save that one for last so we could get some pictures. Meanwhile Quicksilver shows up and Makescents is looking at the box with excitement. We start unwrapping, everyone is finding silver. 68, 65, another 1962D Ben and finally a 64 Kennedy. All said and done 29 x 40%ers and 4 x 90%ers.

I ask myself how many boxes will I do without finding silver. We collect the AU coins, NIFC's and proofs but honestly silver is the goal. :yes:Each time we get a new box I remember what others have said. It is about volume. I am doing 2500 a week and we have dry spells. We have been rewarded nicely the last two months too.

I enjoy reading of everyones success and frustration because it keeps me doing a box a day. Good Luck as always and remember your next box may be your Personal Best!

I bought two rolls of dollar coins today from a bank. It turns out they all date to 1979/1980, I guess they have been stored somewhere for a while. Some are in very high-grade of condition. Is there anything I should look out for with these coins such as a particular variety or mint mark?

Also, one of these SBA's is circulated and has zero copper showing in the edge. The edge looks like solid nickel. This is quite strange so if anyone has an answer about this coin I would love to hear about it.

repede: From what I understand, the armored car companies buy coins from each other if they're running out. My main pick-up bank's service uses the flat Strings-knockoff boxes, but recently I got several of the two-layer cube boxes with the plastic wrapper instructions. They're now back to the Strings lookalikes. My new bank usually uses actual Strings boxes, but of the two I picked up from the today one was a Strings and the other was the knockoff.

NOS: 1979 (P) wide rim (AKA near date) is the only one I know anything about. Compare how far the date is from the rim. All '79 D, '79 S, all '80's, and all '81's have the narrow rim / far date. San Francisco produced business strikes as well as proofs from '79 to '81, but apparently Philly made the proofs and SF didn't make any SBA's in '99.

smalldollars.com is my usual reference, but their site seems to be down right now.

4 cwr of halves... nothing. 6 rolls of quarters... nothing. One roll of nickels got me a 20 pence. Dry around these parts.
