Did a search but didn't really find a thread like this, so... What kind of holders do you prefer for your coins? Flips? Envelopes? Some kind of plastic capsule? Slabs, graded or ungraded? Shoebox? Why do you prefer what you do? Have you tried several and found that one protects your coins better/looks nicer? As a kid I used to be all about those cardboard flips. Everything went into cardboard flips with sometimes misspelled labels, from wheaties to silver and gold coins. A few years ago, I moved my most valuable and beloved coins to AirTite ring holders, but left everything else in cardboard flips. A large portion of my collection is still in cardboard flips, but now I'm moving the best my collection into Lighthouse Quadrum 2x2 holders, because they: -IMO, are way more attractive and show off the coin better. -Are sturdier than cardboard; -Are uniform in size, no matter the size of the coin inside, allowing for easy stacking/lining up. The AirTites were sturdy and attractive, but they weren't uniform in size, which made me a sad panda. I'm going to leave most of the common foreign and damaged/off-quality US coins in the flips; the better-quality and rarer US coins, precious metal, error strikes, or just things I really really like are going into the Quadrums. This "bisontenioll" half dollar is staying in its ~16-year-old flip for the giggle value, though:
For me it's about what I'm doing with them. Personal collection items all uncirculated coins for my sets go into archival quality albums. Circulated sets I plan on keeping long haul go into sulfur free folders. Uncirculated extras or type coins all go into ring airtites. Also any rare/one of a kind coins regardless of condition also go into ring airtites. For the most part I buy slabs like a dealer would. Only what the coin is worth slabbed or not. Only exceptions to this are my Morgan dollars and modern Eagles and even then I don't over pay for the plastic. Solid date/mint or decade coins go into labeled plastic coin tubes. Any Unc/Proof coins I plan on selling or might sell go into mylar cardboard flips and any lower grade circualted go into the same flips or non elastisized plastic flips depends on what's handy and how long the coin will be stored in the flip. Bags or rolls are stored that way until I open them up. Anything worth only face get's put into a counter and zip lock baggies and taken to the bank.
Wow you have the famed bisontenioll Kennedy half? 7.5 million is my offer. Please accept it, please...?
I have moved most proof and uncirculated coins into Lighthouse Quadrums, and posted a review on them a month ago. They are not perfect, but the best I could find for about 50 cents each, in terms of protection and presentation. Lesser coins go in sa-flips, and I have a few in TPG slabs. Junk resides in square tubes.
I use airtites for my better coins these are then put into cardboard airtite holders. The cheaper stuff goes into a cardboard flip and into pocket pages.
Premier Coin World coin holders I second this recommendation. These slab type holders match the size of current PCGS slabs perfectly, they even stack with PCGS slabs. I chose these to house my raw coins in my US type set. They are stored with PCGS graded coins. Many options for labeling, coin is inserted without touching it, little on the higher side for cost at $1 each.
I like to heat seal tokens and coins in SAFLIPs because most sizes up to half dollar will fit them and still seal. And because most of what I collect is circulated so the risk of a rub from putting them in flips is not that earth shattering.
