Do you guys think this 1883 nickel is a business strike or a proof? Also, what do you think it would grade at PCGS or NGC? Thanks.
Business strike: lack of star detail, denticles dont look squared, date doesnt look squared. Hard to tell if the weakness above the forehead is wear or a weak strike but it looks more like a weak strike. Id go ms63-64. Too much chatter in the fields for more than that though IMO.
Valente, you seem knowledgeable on the V nickels, what would one need to look for to distinguish between proof and business strike?
I agree it is a business strike. The most noticeable indication, like valente mentioned, is the detail on the stars. Especially the ones at 4,5, and 7 o'clock. Here is a proof to compare:
Start with what Valente said was missing: Add to that squared rims (the corners between the edge and rims will usually be square on a Proof coin and rounded or bevelled on a Business Strike. Basically a Proof coin will be fully-struck (or at least a MUCH better strike than a Business Strike).
Not a proof, but the coin has some interesting die cracks, including one through the date. -thecointrader
