Shesh too bad both sides dont look like the reverse. It would grade like MS68 then O.O

Considering the front id say MS 64

That Morgan seems very clean and has minimal chatter. If the photos aren't hiding anything, I think its an easy 65.

I'm trying to learn so I have a question. The area on the reverse around the breast plate right at the base of the neck. Are those bad marks or am I just seeing something that's not there?

Its a MS 64 and it is an awesome coin. If you sent it out to a TPG, I wouldn't be surprised if it was returned as a 65 because the strike is wonderful. The reverse is in the 68 zone, with every breast and neck feather clean and visable. The wing tips are strong and perfect. The stars, rim pearls, and letters seem perfect and without a nick.... which is frankly amazing.

The Obverse, god those fang marks kill me.

There is the slightest weakness in the strike in the hair above the ear. The nose, lips and eyes are struck exceptionally. There seems to be something happening in the E of Liberty of the band. The 4th and seventh stars have small nicks and the first 8 in 1887. Other than that, the lettering is statuesque in granite like reverse carving, in all its 3 dimensional glory. The slightest chater in the cheek exists, and some decent bag marks in the fields in front of the face.

I love this example, especially for a Philadelphia strike.

I see nothing wrong with the eagle or neck.

All I see on the reverse is a small light scuff mark to the left of the wing, then some chatter near the E and S in States.

Of course one would need better more upclose pics to be certain.

Then on the obverse I see plenty of chatter mostly near the cheek and neck then a deep couple marks on the right side.

I love this coin and would pay a premium for it.

The more and more I look at the reverse the more I love it.

Sigh if only the obverse was on par.

BTW - the tail feathers above the arrows is amazingly clear.

Dont get me wrong fellas the obverse is nice. Its a pretty strong strike and its not in bad shape.

But that reverse... my god it is quite possibly the best or one of the best reverses of a Morgan I have EVER seen. It definitely makes the top 10 list of reverses for me.

The F in OF might be a little weak. It is struck better on the bottom of the reseverse then the top and there seems to be some kind of die variety action on the bottom at the A and R in DOLLAR which seems to have raised edges.

see that line connecting the upper parts of UNUM. That has to be die specific.

The worse part is the area under the chin, and I'm not really sure what is happening there.

I'm going to go against the grain thus far and put it at MS64. The picture is great for the details but hard to tell the luster, a key ingredient to Gem (ms65 and above). I rate it 64 because of the contact marks on the cheek, especially the cheek bone and the chatter in the field below the chin and in front of the neck. You also have denticle marks in the secondary focal areas behind the head. The field is gorgeous in front of the face though. The reverse is a solid gem ms66 plus.

I could be wrong and if Mr. Brooklyn will give you MS65 money I'd get the envelope ready.

As for my credentials I am occasionally hired by very wealthy coin dealers in my area to accompany them to coin shows to help them grade raw silver dollars, especially GSA's and potentially undergraded coins in old TPG holders. I'm batting .800 on the raw coins and I'm right over half the time on already graded material. The coin in my avatar is one I made buying a coin off ebay, turned out to be MS65 star :)

    I agree that it is a 64.

Sofar both Brooklyn and myself said we thought it was a ms64 :D. He mentioned he could see them grading it a 65, and I would have to agree its not impossible that could happen.

Most likely itll grade ms64 and thats where it should be. If it got 63 id be shocked.

    :(

After Doug’s lecture on wear and strike softness, I'm hoping this is not wear in this area

I don't think it is. I wish this coin was never dipped.
