found this in change the other day. that blob takes out the "rty" in "liberty" & there are a few extra small specks above "liberty." on the reverse side there is a deep impression (currently filled with some kind of white residue) which looks to be in the exact spot as the raised mark on the face side. does this thing have any value?
It sure does! One Cent, redeemable just about anywhere. Jokes aside, it's probably either from a hole punch, maybe zinc rot, hard to say for sure. But not a mint error.
I have a jefferson nickel that was shot with a handgun, and a morgan dollar that was probably shot by a .44 pistol, there really cool.
to give a more detailed answer, that is what is known as zinc rot. when a break occurs in the copper plating it allows the elements into the zinc core and the rot begins. eventually there will be nothing left of this coin. SPENT IT QUICK :} :}
Ziggy is the first to explain what actually has happened to your cent beyond "PMD". I agree with Zinc Rot. Oxidized zinc is gray/white.

I remember putting that penny in a glass of coke in 1985, it was in 3rd period science class, right before we invented the water powered car that stretches rope and spews rainbow colored MS70 1992 D close AMs from the tailpipe allready graded by PCGS as it travels through time...now if I could only get back to the future...
