Here's one to try and guess**GRADE REVEALED** Guess the grade PCGS gave it. I'll reveal the grade this evening at 6:30 :thumb: I just got a reminder from a friend of mine that I'm going with him to a private collector to look at some coins he's interested in at 6 tonight. So I need to move the reveal time up to 4 this afternoon instead of 6:30.
The reverse of that coin is gorgeous! The face of liberty's got some scars and zits but I still wanna say '65 on this one. [edit] Die crack at 7:00 on reverse (between star and 'O' in one)?
I am gonna err on the side of caution, and say 64, due to the contact marks on Lady L's cheek. The reverse is much better, but I still think a borderline 65 --if I were grading the coin, I'd go 65, for overall strike, luster, and eye appeal, but I bet PCGS went 64 on it.
Yeah, it is a bit noisy with some contact marks, but you know? The coin has obvious eye appeal, and luster up the wazoo. I think the cheek marks bother me more than the eye. Still, think it is a pretty coin. I, for sure, don't see anything less than 64 and an outside shot at 65 for good strike, high luster, clear details, etc.
There's also a die crack on the obverse at the base of her neck. How about that trench through the eagle's right wing, reverse side?
Hard to see PL in that lighting. I don't see big mirrors--what I see is a solid Philadelphia strike, with tons of luster, and great details. The die crack isn't a mint bag issue, so it should not detract, and was pretty noticeable. After a second look, there are some light bag marks on the reverse too. Still, it is a question of what was more important to the graders. Did they go for the luster and strike over the nicks on the Obverse?? I sense a surprise coming up--but I still don't see less than a 64. I will go with my grade being a 65, and PCGS being a 64. Could they gave gone lower than a 64? Sure, but I just don't see it, when you look at the coin for OVERALL impact. I'd happily own that baby.
Yeah, I caught the 'trench' after I went in a second time and added my die crack edit in my first post. I just like the over all appearance and eye appeal of this coin.
Here is my '87 DMPL that I have for comparison purposes. I don't see any mirrors like that, but I do see great luster and better strike on BU's coin. Mine is a 63.
I'm guessing the coin in hand has a far better degree of reflectivity than the photography has captured. Regardless of the distracting marks of the focal areas, I very much like the coin.
Personally I would never go above 63 on it. I believe the marks on the obverse are too severe on her face for higher. I like the coin, hint of tone and nice luster, I just think its a poster child coin on where NOT to have heavy marks. Take it from someone who does not collect morgans.
63's are usually more beat up than this one. Yes, it has distractions, but has major eye appeal for tone, luster, strike, etc.
