Additionally, the lot came with 2 more AG Eagle Cents, 2 more indian cents (VG+), 2 cull holed 3 cent pieces, 2 more 1909VDB's, 1 1909 cent, 50+ more AU-BU wheat cents (probably a quarter are nice toners), a few other cleaned G+ dimes, a half dime, some junk-ish silver, a bunch of buffalo nickels, some G+ shield nickels, some eisenhower dollars + kennedy halfs (both are non-silver) and some other random stuff. All in all I don't think I did too bad.
I'd say good things in this lot far outweigh the bad, especially with getting the high grade gold dollar.
Agreed, however there was "supposed" to be an 1866 3-cent silver piece in the lot. Seller for some reason didn't label it as 3-cent nickel even though they specified another one as nickel. That would have made this a much better deal for sure. I'm thinking once I sell the problem coins / ones i don't want, I'll keep the nice ones at a big discount.
It's possible, though it doesn't have any telltale signs in person. At least not "whizzed". The picture doesn't show the full luster and any wear seems natural. Then again, it wouldn't take much to get any kind of grime off of gold so it is possible. I might send it into PCGS along with some other pieces for my 8 free grades (have a few other US gold pieces, etc...).
Its not the luster or wear I question. Both those look great. Its the scratches I see (and those I can not see). All the scratches all go in one direction and they seem to be very fine small ones, which hints of a cloth rubbing across the face.
Took a little bit of a closer look and you may be right. I think the telltale sign is the smudging / change in texture around the edges of the design (front and back). Looks like it was lightly cleaned and they "missed" a few spots much like you would on a pot or pan. Guessing I should avoid sending this into PCGS and just enjoy the nice details?
I mean id have to see another pic of two to be sure. But juding from that yes it would get a details holder. Its not completely beat up though. considering its very lusterfull still and is AU quality id think its still worth at least 100-130 if not a bit more compared to the roughly 80 bucks of actual gold in it thats still not bad.
The 1818 looks like it's a 8 over 7 RPM. What do the rest of you think? Too bad it's so scratched up. Good coin to fill a slot in a variety album though, and if it is cleaned, its not like the other extreme examples. A couple of those look like someone used a car buffer on 'em!
The 1818 is definitely an 8/7. It says it on the coin flip but that part isn't in the picture So, one thing I noticed. I listed all the problem coins on ebay at .99 w/ free shipping (still like 5 days left) and I got a bit paranoid. I don't like selling things without knowing every little thing about them. So I bust out the CherryPickers guide and start cross referencing the ebay items. Low and behold, one of the coins is a newer variety. There's not very much on it online and I have yet to see an auction listing with the variety in it. Pictures as proof; Has anyone seen this before or know it's possible value? More information on this page: http://www.seateddimevarieties.com/date_mintmark/1872_109apage.htm and this one http://www.seateddimevarieties.com/date_mintmark/1872varpage.htm They say it's an R-4 rarity and the value should be 30-50% more. It's a bummer that it is a cleaned coin because the details on it are pretty nice (minus the scratches). Thoughts?
So... I will be creating ANOTHER thread about my recent acquisitions. I think I may have hit the proverbial jackpot. Most of my other auction lots have turned out well, giving me quite a few nice coins and will sell the "problem coins" to heavily discount them. I made a deal for these coins, as well as a vol. II book w/ 10 more coins. http://www.ebay.com/itm/120904751006?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 I think I ended up paying less than G-4 price for all of the coins and MOST of them are EF-BU Details. I would say about half the silver coins are lightly cleaned (I see hairlines, etc...) but it looks like the copper ones are ok (as far as I can tell). The 1868 3-cent silver is not 1868, it is 1859 (bummer) however it is EF-AU and looks very nice. I'm a little bummed some of them are cleaned, but I got a good enough deal to make it more than worth it. I wanted to send in some to PCGS as they would pull a pretty penny if they were truly AU+.
