I have recently bought this 1885 PL Morgan Dollar graded by NGC, it is in one of the older holder, and in my opinion I think that it could upgrade by a whole grade if not two. I am open for opinions, I also bought 1900-O PL, 1901-O PL, 1902-O PL in the older holders and I believe that they can up-grade also. Thoughts? -Kyle
65 looks correct, but I haven't been agreeing with the grades of TPGs lately. They all seem to be overgrading lately.
You're going to need some better lighting and a photo editing program like photoscape (free). Then you can post something like this that we can offer an opinion on: This is a MS-66 of mine. When you're asking for opinions about a 65 upgrading to a 66, you're probably going to need better pics than this one. If that coin was raw in your picture, we couldn't offer a single opinion of grade or condition.
I wouldn't be comfortable advising a position with the photo's provided, however I do believe you are likely in possession of a great chance to move up to MS66PL. I like the exquisite strike, eye appeal and near flawless geometry of the cheek (frosty, intact, few rub marks). Send it in for sure and don't feel back if you lose $50 bucks trying. I am into Gem Morgans and am beginning to be able to determine the difference between MS65 and MS66 with pretty good accuracy. I've been hired by folks to assist in buying decisions.
Not a great picture, but good enough for it to look like a solid 65 to me. Next time, shoot it right side up, please. Nice coin!
Better pictures are needed; however, from I can see in the pics you provided, this could have gone 64 or 65.
