Can US mint coins be bought without all the extras?

I'm pretty sure that the printed box, hinged case, paperwork, etc. must cost something, and that dealers that buy, say, 500 of the new commemoratives just chuck all that in the trash when they are sent off to be graded. Does anyone know if it's possible to buy just the coin in the capsule, less all the packaging?

Just seems wasteful if it's going to be slabbed...

I've contacted the mint but do not expect as quick a response as I will get here.

    Thanks.

Not that I know of. But I really don't see much benefit of having modern coins slabbed anyway.

  4. As far as I know, you cannot buy them directly from the US Mint without the OGP. However, you can easily do so in the secondary market. Check out coinshop.com and click the link for commemoratives. TC
