Thought this was a nice looking coin, and then I took a picture of it. Kinda scary looking. Now that I have seen this coin up close and personal, I dont know if I can ever look at it the same again. PCGS PR66. Has this ever happened to you?
Yes this has happened to me. I've sent coins in to be graded and received a lower grade than I thought it should have than taken a picture of it to sell and that's when I've noticed the reason why it has received the grade it did.
I dont think the lighting is the issue here. I'm sure if I play around with the lighting that coin pciture COULD look more attractive, but I dont know if that would make the picture more accurate. Now that I look at the coin closely with my eyes, the haze and mess on his face show up. The shinyness of the coin masked the unattractice toning happening on this coin. To me, it's just not a pretty coin, but I didnt notice until I got up close to it with the photo.
I didnt mean to imply I'm questioning the grade. I am sure the grade is accurate, there is no cameo and I dont think it should be higher or lower than PF66. I was more suggesting that on a quick look of the coin, it looks fine with nice luster and I think maybe SINCE it was a TPG coin, with a grade, I didnt really STARE at it like I should have, and really LOOK at this coin up close. Since this is the only Franklin I own, I dont really know anything about the series. This was a super lowball bid, so I could get a cheap coin in hand to dip my toes in the water on this series. The ghost like mess on his face, and the other toning is really there. At this point, it's much easier to see it in a photo, since it's "ghostly". Most of the pictures here on coin talk are taken to show off the coin, make it appear as attractive as possible. I think that in the process of taking coin pics, sometime people must be suprised by what shows up after they press the shutter release. I think posting GOOD pictures of UGLY coins might be as informative as the show-off pics. That's all I was trying to say.
It's a two-face coin Reminds me of a Seinfeld episode where Jerry's girlfriend is nice looking but then she appears poles apart in a different light. I think George called her a "two-face".
I know exactly what you are saying geek. I was shocked when I first started taking pictures and realized how many of my coins really had things going on that I didn't see with my bare eyes. With proofs, like your Frankie, the imperfections, hazing, and other imperfections really show up in the image. I agree with you on this one. Although you need better lighting etc...it still doesn't seem to have very nice eye appeal. I also agree that a good picture of ugly coins is just as informative and important. Members here seem to pass out 'likes' to anyone who posts a high grade coin. Ugly coins with great images are equally deserving. -g
Cameras often see more than the eye does, particularly with proofs. And I've seen images that definitely show a cleaned coin but didn't see it by eye. Cameras don't care.
Even if the coin is ugly, you could at least light Frankie from the front instead of the back of his horrible hair-style.
There is a difference between sight and vision. Sight in the human eye or camera collects the image that stimulates the sensor ( CCD or other) or the retina. The camera lens focuses on a large field, the human eye can not as its "sight" instrument is just a single organic lens that can only focus on a small area. But the eye sends the info to the brain as it flits about the whole image, and the brain stitches the images together and then sharpens or blurs the image according to other non-sight factors, such as social relationships, cultural, age beliefs, etc. to present to your mind a heavily processed image. Your mother is usually more beautiful. your kids are cuter, and your coin is perfect ( or at least better than the average). Your lady will look better as a girl friend than as your former ex. Jim
if you really dont like it, i will give you a proof 56 still in the govt cello for it. ill give you the whole mint set! MUST HAVE ZOMBIE FRANKLIN!!!
