Got this coin today at the tollbooth. Looks to be off on both OBV and REV. The rim on the REV looks particularly interesting. Also the edge reeding is all but non-existent though the edge doesn't look to be worn - just smooth with faint reeding marks. Weighs in at 5.67 g Any suggestions as to it being a misaligned die, off-center strike or PMD?
If it has no reeding, and is not 100% round, it might be struck out of collar as wel.. I think the correct term is broadstruck.
You said it has faint reeding. Both a broadstrike and an off centered strike are out of collar errors. Since the collar applies the reeding then it cannot be either of these. If the coin hass reeding and it is not the proper diameter or is not round then I would say PMD. But if the coin does not have reeding then I would say a broadstrike. Could you post a pic of the edge?
Here are two shots of the edge - taken with an Intel microscope. I see somethng that looks like reeding or similar. Could the planchet have popped the collar as it was being struck making partial reeding visible?
Nice photos. I see no reeding. There is just evidence at one spot of the collar just barely contacting one side of the edge. I would call this coin a broadstrike. Some people would go farther and label it as an uncentered broadstrike.
Uncentered broadstrike. Broadstrikes can come centered and uncentered. A centered broadstrike will have the wide "rim" evenly all the way around because the planchet was properly centered between the dies and it spread out evenly. On an uncentered broadsrike the planchet was off to one side and there will be a wide rim on one side and little to no rim on the other, but ALL of the design will be visible. If the planchet is even further off so that part of the design in missing, then it is an off-center.
