Thanks for all your replys guys. I have taken the coin to a local coin shop today formally Spinks They believe it is 1801 Flemish imitative coinage. Im a bit disapointed now but they say they are quite rare but not very valuable. If anyone can add anything i am much obliged. Cheers Graham

1801 ? Either your fingers are doing what mine did earlier, or somebody is confused.

Well i am definately confused The shop said it was Spink ref 1801 Henry V1 a flemish imitative coin {copy} of Spink ref 1799. I did notice however that the book they showed me was coins of England Spink 2011. Does this make any sense? They also pointed out that the reverse says ihe and should be ihc ? Whats your opinions on the coin if this is correct? Cheers Graham

Ahhhh - they did the same thing I did - gave you the Spink catalog number, not the date. Only when I typed I meant to type 1744 and instead hit 1742.

What they are saying is that the coin matches the Spink catalog number 1801, which is the same as #1799, but it (1801) was minted in the Netherlands instead of in England. The date that 1799 was minted was between 1422-1430.

After looking closer I agree it is not 1744, but I am not sure it is 1801 either, it looks like 1799 to me. But they've seen it in hand and I haven't so I'd go with what they say.

some coin copies can be worth as much if not more than the originals, take the dutch copies of the oliver cromwell shilling. but there was quite a spate of flemish forgeries of classic european coins in the 19th century similar to today's chinese problem. this copy is worth around 1/10th the original.
