Guess the grade before I crack this out to throw into a Dansco Washington album. The obverse will display some fingerprints but those are on the slab, not the coin. This was an impulse buy to add to my Washington Dansco album after I couldn't find any raw uncirculated ones at a reasonable price. Figured it'd be fun to see what others guess as it's grade before this sucker is set free. ;)

My first reaction upon seeing the coin was 63.

After looking at it some more, I think I'm low.

But I'm sticking with my gut.

Is the coin more dramatically toned/colored than the photos illustrate?

Just curious as your photos have me a bit confused.

    Nice coin, BTW.

There is a slight bit of toning around the edges but the pictures brought out more of the toning, in hand it has more luster. I took the pictures outside so some of what you see might be some shade as I couldn't get a good angle in most of the pictures I took, these two were the better of them.

The coin looks AU to me, but I'm curious to see what they said. Sure wouldn't surprise me if they said 63.

Yeah, the pictures don't give it any justice for sure. Once I crack it out and spill the PCGS grade given, I'll post some pictures of it not being behind the slab.

I'd say AU58 but maybe the scan is not showing the luster that the coin has and what I see as ware being tone.

    I'll quote myself from above:

I'll give a hint though, I'm putting this in my Washington Dansco album which my intention is that they are all uncirculated condition, so with that in mind, I wouldn't have bought an AU coin to crack out for the album. ;)

My first take was AU also, but since you have ruled that out, I will go with 64.

But since it came back a MS62, please tell us who graded it, so I will know where to send MY stuff.

PCGS. I'll post a picture of the slab once I have access to the picture sitting on another computer. :)

    62. Hmmm. That grade confuses me. Perhaps luster is a bit more muted than the photos suggest. I can't see any major hits to speak of. Curious grade to me and has me asking myself, what have I missed.....

I would venture to say those guessing 58 or strong 58 are right, and in an article in the past year a TPG grader said as much. He said coins that used to be high end AU are now being slabbed 61, 62, sometimes even 63. Therefor, absent a better photo, I agree nice AU that they simply "market grade" slab a 62 nowadays.

Honestly, it would not bother me that they do that at all, and would actually prefer it, if they simply dropped the word BU to describe 60-70.

Btw nice coin OP. Very pleasing and clean look to it.

That in today's world the TPGs routinely grade AU coins as MS62 and 63.

62 huh, to me it looks like it had a little run on the highpoints of the hair.
Still a very nice coin. My 1932 is G-4 lol. My mother found it on the sidewalk when she was younger.

Why would you crack such an amazing coin out of a PCGS holder just to put in an album??? There goes the $25+ spent on grading the coin :(

Because he can, he gets more enjoyment out of having them in the album, he gets tactile enjoyment out of actually touching a coin and not peering through plastic, because he secretly wants to be a "cool kid" and bandsaw slabs freely like the cool ancient collectors do, lots of reasons. :)

Money spent on slabbing is not an added value to the coin really. It can help sell a coin, can give you comfort when buying a coin, but what good is it if you own a coin you do not wish to sell?
