Im by no means an expert but i think you would have a hard time getting the attribution. Nice coin though.

Do you think they missed the fact that it was PL the first time? My answer is that it is semi proof like which is very common for Morgan Dollars. In addition, I disagree with Matt that the coin is a nice coin. I think it is absolute dreck and would never have a coin like that in my collection. I hope you were not the buyer. If you were take solace in the fact they have a return policy.

No I doubt if it's it's proof like with all the luster it seems to have . PL or DMPL coins usually won't have cartwheel luster .

Paul why would you call someones coin , "dreck" some people can't afford high grade coins . Seems you take a pretty elitist view of other peoples coins .

If that is how you want to interpret my comment Rusty, that is your choice. However, if you dig a little deeper, you will realize that I am helping him. The spread between an MS61 and MS63 common date Morgan Dollar is less than $20. So for an extra $10-$20 he could have a nice MS63 with much more eye appeal and better resale liquidity.

I understand that not everyone has unlimited funds to buy coins. But I have never met anyone whose collection was one piece of dreck. Rather, they almost always have 10 pieces of dreck (or more). Instead of buying 10 cheap coins, they could have bought a couple really nice gems for the same price. It is similar to the box of 20 philosophy practiced by collectors who do have much more expendable income.

Then they realize that they have $500-$1000 tied up in their collection and their eyes gravitate towards an MS65 but when they try to sell their coins (dreck) they find that the buyers are few and far between and they end up losing 25% of their investment.

Out of curiosity Rusty, would you want that coin in your collection? Be Honest!

No, it is not proof like. I have had 5 morgan collections over the years. If it were proof like, NGC would have certified it as such. They are much more liberal on that designation, and tend to attribute that more often. If it were even close to PL, it would have been resubmitted, and would sell for 4 times that amount. Even common date New Orleans and Philadelphia PLs are far more scarce than S mint ones from the 80s.

In all honesty , no I wouldn't want that particular coin in my collection , But if you explained it like that to begin with I think the op would have learned more . I guess I take exception with the word dreck , which sounds elitist to me . I've seen it used mostly on the CU forum when others are laughing at others choices instead of explaining what they might do to have a better collection .

    Sorry,

I had a Doug moment of bluntness. I thank you for calling me out on it. I can't rightly criticize Doug of doing that if I am guilty of it myself.

Having a bad forum night. I just made a response to snapsalot's thread about PL Morgans thinking it was this one. I watched the Flyers lose to the Devils tonight, they must have infected my performance.

Anyway, to further my point. I found a very nice PL 1884-O Morgan in Heritages archives.

1884-O Morgan Dollar NGC MS63 PL $99 Heritage

Rather than buying a coin like the one on E-Bay, he could save his money and end up with a quality coin like this one.

that's what I thought 'till I looked at the expanded view. there are 3-4 dings right on liberty's cheek, a critical area. it's sometimes kinda hard to grade from photos. I need to see the coin in hand in most cases.

no there is often 3-4 dings on the check are from bag marks. What works against it, counter intuitively, is that the wonderful New Orleans strike may be working against it.
