So, there I was, searching through a box of cents from my local bank, and having a hard time of it finding anything but the occasional s-mint cent, nice-looking crap from the 70's and 80's, and the occasional 1948-1958 wheatback cent, when what should fall out of my roll but an amazing find. That's right kids, I have now filled a major hole in my set with this one. I should mention before I go on that I took said coin to three different local dealers, all three of whom gave me the same verdict, that it was real and not a counterfeit. My find was a 1914-d cent in VG condition! Whenever I get a camera up and working again, I'll post a picture, but I was AMAZED to say the least that I found something like that out here in the dry and dusty desert of Arizona!
wow...awesome find! My best find was one from today....I went to a bank and asked if they had any halves. They said they only had one, and I asked if I could see it. It was a 1964 =p That's the first 90% half I've found so far...
Woot! Now there's a good find, didn't Bone find one a while back too? Congratulations on this great find...I was beginning to wonder where you went-college been keeping you busy? lol...great find, again... I, too can't wait for pics!!! Bill
I've found only 1910, 1917, 1920 and 1920 S in penny-boxes. 1919 in pocket change. What a find! Congrats!
That's a great find. Would you beleive I snagged one about 6 months ago from a sack of wheat-backs. One think you've got to be careful of is the counterfeit ones which are alterted 1944-D cents. There will be a WIDE space between the 1 and the 4 on a fake one while the real ones are much closer. Bone
Yeah, that's why I took it right away to all those different dealers, all three of whom confirmed its authenticity. I'm gonna send it in to PCGS sometime soon here. AJM
Ok, I wasn't kidding, I went to the bank. I looked through my $10 worth of pennies, and it seems like someone got rid of their collection of pennies from the 1970's and 80's. Most of the coins were super shiny, not cleaned, but BU, if you can say that. I think I'll try another teller tomorrow!
Its hard enough to find cents from the teens..but to find a key..thats amazing. The oldest wheat cent i found in rools was a 1911-D.
Absolutely.... Just as soon as I figure out where I put my camera and batteries. I'm currently home for the summer from college, and all my stuff's in boxes. When I get my camera, you guys'll get a pic! AJM
WOW...I've never found a wheat cent that old from a bank..especially a key date at that. Most of my finds were 90% and 40% halves and all Kennedys. The only remote chance of finding a cent like that at the bank is rare to say the least. Once in a while I'll throw a dateless or very worn buffalo nickel or Standing Liberty Quarter back into circulation in hopes to get younger people interested in the hobby. Maybe thats how your 1914-d cent found its way into circulation again.
It's people like you, indianhead, that make coin collecting fun. Thats exactly how I got started, looking at rolls from the bank for old coins and stuff, haven't ever found a standing liberty, but I have found a buffalo and a couple others. I have a little brother, and sometimes I go to the bank and get some rolls for him to look in, I might "doctor" them a little by adding a few coins, makes it a little more fun for him that way! Thanks
I've been to the banks here in Phoenix, and I've gotten all kinds of things. Here's some of the best from circulation I've picked up from each denomination: Cents: 1914-d in VG Nickels: 1908 V-Nickel Dimes: 1919-d Mercury Dime Quarters: 1932 silver Washington Quarter Halves: Several 90%/40% Kennedy halves, a couple Standing Libertys and 1 Franklin, along with two BU rolls of 1976 Bicentennial Halves Dollars: A few Ike's here and there Notes: mostly $1 Silver Certs and a few Red Seal $2s and $5s So evidently, there are a lot of people who either (a) don't collect or care in Phoenix, or (b) like to throw a lot of stuff back into circulation like you, indianhead! AJM
wow, nice find! and PM me the locations of some of the dealers, if you would edit: what the heck, i never find that stuff here! although my mom did get a 1930-s buffalo nickel, from... NAU! hah, you missed it. it was this summer, so you were home - but then she decided to keep it , i so dont have it
