Doug , Gotcha on the extra CS , now for your question . One of the 1st things people should learn is to grade coins , But what system do you use . I'd love it if the tpgs would use ANA 6th edition standards but they don't and they pretty much set the standards used in the pricing guides , IMHO . So even though the correct grade for this coin is in the 53-55 area if slabbed it would be a 58 and sell for 58 money . As long as we know the difference and that the tpgs are market grading coins , does it really matter in the long run ? Buy the coin and not the slab .
ANA guide is best. Just a humble opinion....... Just the way things should be graded.....again, one mans humble opinion.
You're right Ken , all my unslabbed coins are graded by the ANA standards , I'd love it if the tpgs would use it too , or at the least grade it to their own written standards . In a perfect world they would . : )
Well, mostly everything I learned about grading came from looking at hundreds of coin photos and coins in hand and from you. I'm actually better with photographs than real coins I think now would be a good time to thank you for all that patient teaching to a very stubborn and not so quick student. Thanks.
Doug you helped a lot of people . If not with your dogged insistence on rereading the grading books and comparing the PCGS written standards to the ANA standards . If not for that fact alone one less person trusts the tpgs grading as correct and knowing the difference , thanks buddy .
OK OK.. knock it off.. You guys go and start being nice to Doug and he is gonna get a big head.. Sheesh.. I am in the low end AU group on the coin by the way.
Can't turn that guy no how.....he'll always speak his mind and then give ya the facts as to why he arrives at a certain decision. Difficult indeed to fence with the sheriff when it comes to grading.....even if I don't always agree with him.
It is a slider. Looks circulated to me--I'd guess AU 55 or so. However, it is sometimes hard to differentiate bag marks and coin contact marks from mint bags with very minor wear. Looks a wee bit dull to me to make MS 60.
