I saw a thread about the two coin ASE set that's going to be coming out this summer. I can't seem to find the thread here any more and I had a question about grading. I was wondering how many of these sets you would realistically have to send to PCGS to get the PF70 grade? Also, will you have to ask them for the First Strike designation or will they place that on the label because they are only going to be striking them to order?

Ok mr cheeks the 2 coin set will be minted starting on may 7th of this year. The mint will begin to sell it on june 7th and will mint it according to the number of buy orders placed for 4 weeks, approximately july 7th.It will contain an S mint mark proof coin and an S mint marked reverse proof coin.If a million sets are ordered they will mint a million of them.If 10k sets are ordered they will mint 10k of them.Grading is a harder question.I've sent in 10 pf ASEs last year and got 10 pf 69s so I wont waste time and money on that.

Agreed. It's a bulk submitters game. Unless you are of that status with PCGS it's too costly. Bulk submitters (those who regularly submit thousands of coins monthly throught the year, year after year) only pay like $5-10 per coin to submit. I think it takes something like one in 20-30 to get an 70. Unless you get lotto lucky and get alot of coins struck very early in the die's life and even then it's only like the first 5 before some die deterioration starts to show. Remember the bigger the coin and the softer the metal (.999 pure) the more that can go wrong take the 5oz ATB bullions some issues just can't grade 70 at all.
There's the rub. This was mentioned in another thread here on CT. They get a few 70 coins to make back their coin costs and grading fees and the rest get sold at discount because they are all profit and at around $54 for MS69 (standard west point or san fran issue) it's a healthy one. Problem is you can't get enough 70's with 5 or so sets. There is no guarantee the sets will grade match, and finally you have to pay like $17-20 per coin not the required $5-10 to make it work.
To answer your other question. If they do only sell them for a month then all but the very last coins will be first strike due to the time contraint of PCGS geting the coins before the 30th day and just FYI you have to pay $18 extra on top of the grading fee again unless you get that cost cut down on submission status.

I bought 5 sets of the A25's. Got back 3 full sets of 70's, 1 full set of 69's and 1 mixed set of 69/70.
I was probably just lucky with my sets, so don't assume that you will get the same results.

Yeah it seems that lil would play a part in it. How is it that a coin right from the mint will
not grade a perfect PF70? Is it because, as stated the die deterioration after a few strikes? Or because some wear that occurs while shipping the coin? I would love to have a PF70
and not have to pay the premium for it. Haha

You can't have a 70 without paying a premium. The premium you have to pay is the cost to have it graded and encapsulated.

Haha you indeed have a point there. Never thought of it like that.

I saw a website the other day that is actually allowing you to pre-order these sets in PF70. That's crazy that they can pre-sell them and regular Joes who enjoy collecting can't send them to a TPG and get a PF70.

Money talks, and these business's who set up the market for these things, control it. That is what capitalism is all about. They control the supply and intern can demand their premium.

You couldn't be more right. I believe in capitalism, but sometimes it sucks haha. I'll still be happy getting mine from the mint and enjoying them. I'm not looking to flip them so really no skin off my back.

I saw this today, and I am interested in purchasing the set, provided that the cost is not extremely high.

I am guessing the cost will be between $99 and $139.

So, are you collecting slabs/grades or coins? Sounds like you collect the slab over the coin. Just a thought to put in your mind! ;)

That one is going to be fairly common--probably just buy it from the mint for myself, and not expect to slab it, or make a profit.

I just got done looking up the '11 5 coin ASE set. Whoever bought those will make out like a fat cat...selling for $600+ on ebay. The set was only 299.99.
