So this is how I usually collect coins. I fall in love with a specific coin. I bring it home and take dozens of pictures of it. I add it to my website, and post something here....then it goes into a box and I forget about it :)

Then you start a thread about the thread you just started while simultaneously making about 100 other posts in 10 other threads usually linking them all together.

I like it.... but... PICTURES!!!! I'm all about looking at what others have and then feeling envious that they have a beautiful coin that I don't. Then I realize I can live vicariously through the poster when I get caught up caressing the picture with my eyes ... while thinking maybe if I'm super lucky, I'll someday pull 1888 from a roll of Ikes.... or find a seated liberty in a roll of quarters. :)

The trick is to have it laying around your desk. This way your constantly reminded of the coin... and a big mess. :D

I have a few on my desk on plastic and easels. That is how I destroyed my Proof Manhattan coin...

I just don't get the picture taking of every coin. The only pictures I've made of my coins I took just to post here, other than that, it's not like the coins are changing a whole lot and or gonna be leaving the house any time soon (since I don't sell them). If I need to see them, I just pull them out to look at. The kids are gonna be moving out one day and they're getting uglier as they get older, so it makes sense to take pictures while they're growing up so when they get in trouble or asking for money, you can go back to look at their more innocent faces to bring back some better memories.

I shoot all my collectible coins. Nothing artsy-fartsy, just for documentation because I keep my collection in sdb's and in a vault off premises.

That makes sense but pictures alone do not prove ownership to insurance companies in such cases, so I hope you're saving the receipts as well. I do scan my receipts and keep on remote servers for safe keeping in case of disaster. :)

99% of my collection is "found in circulation" and I buy very little. The estate buys are a usually a lump purchase, ie. "coin collection", "camera collection" etc.. None of the items are listed separately when I purchase them from an estate. The pics are more for my recollection because I'm getting old and I forget what I have.:D

Well, a decent color printer can make wonderful wall ornaments of the right coins. Most of these are on my stairway wall with the kids.
