I would like to get opinions on this coin from other collectors. I bid $230 with the idea that it would probably go for around$140-$150. I was out bid and am wondering if I missed something. I think the coins has a very nice strike for an 1857 but nothing so special for it to bid so high. So, did I miss something or did this just turn into a bidding war?
The wear on the bird is consistent with the XF40 grade. No problem there. $140 would have been a fair price ($170 would be about retail) but over $230 is just crazy. It's probably the result of a bidding war by some bidders who weren't very well educated on Flying Eagles. Lesson here: Always do your homework before you buy!
I agree. The coin has an above-average strike and appears to be XF-40 to 45 to me. Nice coin but I would not pay AU money for it. I would let it go.
Yeah, there is no way I am raising my bid. I was just wondering If I made a mistake and others were seeing something I wasn't.
It is hard to find eagles of that strike. I could be wrong, but I shopped these quite a bit at one time. If it has that kind of detail in the wings and the reverse, I'd over pay. Ruben
It has a strong strike and nice color as far as I can tell from the picks . It might be worth a small premium , but I think two people didn't want to lose . For $230 you should be able to pick up an AU coin .
ef looks about right to me, But then, I think picture grading is a precarious venture. You can't always get a good read. and I would not be quick to question PCGS. In general I find their grading is tight, not over generous, but consistent. but that's nuts on the price it went for. there are a lot on ebay, some that are calling theirs ef are definitely over grading but there are several "by it now" in the $115 range, which seems about right to me. Why would you pay that much premium when there are that many coins of equal grade on "buy it now" and ever better certified grades for less that $200
I owned this at one time The alternative to a coin of this quality is to pay thousands for it, instead of a few hundred.
http://www.indiancent.com/4697-1857-ms-64-pcgs-ps.html I love this. There is no way in Gehenem i can pay for it. But i love it.
http://www.indiancent.com/6169-1857-snow-16-au-58-anacs.html OK - maybe I'm wrong but this coin, IMO, has terrible color and the other one looks better. And it is still more expensive than it went for.
My birthday was April 1st if anyone is interest. http://www.indiancent.com/5849-1857-ms-64-ngc-ps.html
Grade isn't everything. I would have paid strong for that coin based on the eye appeal and the strike. Most 1857's your going to find have very little to no details on the tail feathers. Even mid-grade UNC examples will show poor details on the tail. In my opinion that coin is worth AU money as it is nicer than most AU examples I have seen (talking AU50-53). However, like posted earlier, I think this turned into a bidding war by other people who obviously felt the same way.
Unless this coin is some variety (e.g., clashed with a different denomination) the only thing I see is a really good strike. But the strike is not so great that I would pay AU money for it.
