Your opinions, if you will, on this 1892 South Africa 2 1/2 shillings

Hello fellow CT members...

I'd like some opinions on this coin, if you have the time and the inclination to do so...

It's an 1892 South Africa 2 1/2 Shillings, KM#7. Mintage of only 16,000. Had it listed on eBay for about a month, no takers, so I'm thinking I've misjudged its value/grade.

What grade do you think this coin is, and what do you think it's worth?



You're not going to hurt my feelings with honest evaluations. I feel like it's an AU with a few dings, but I want to get your thoughts...

Absolutely. They are definitely nasty. It's such a shame, too...on a coin of this mintage/condition.

 

Nice coin, but looking at the beard and tops of the eagle's wings, looks like wear. Don't know how to grade these, but possibly more of an XF than an AU. No idea on value, but the collecting community for this type of coin is probably small. Check other aution sites for similar coins.

 

Probably not "popular" enough to get the price you`re asking, due to small collectors community, as it has been mentioned already.

I don't know what you ask for it, but if its anywhere near catalog value for XF grade, it might take you a year or two to sell as BIN. I`d say in .99 starting bid auction it might sell for around $50-60.

 

Well, the book value on that coin in XF is $125, AU isn't listed and UNC is $350. I have it listed for $150...but so far only 1 watcher and no offers.

 

Very hard to believe it will sell for anything above $100, but I`ve seen eBay morons buying a $12 coin for $45, so keep it up there, eventually its going to sell. Most likely.

 

Have you tried listing it as auction with starting bid of 150 and seeing if you get any bids? Bins' usually have low turnover rate.

 

Well, I've re-listed it with a lower starting bid (7-day auction) along with a few other coins that haven't sold. Let's see if that gets it any action...lol...if not, I might just keep it in hopes of finding a cool trade down the road. Thanks for all the advice, friends...
