A very nice and attractive Love Token dated 1876. There is a plug at 7:00 and a few rim areas with a little damage but otherwise it’s in great shape. The Love on the reverse is dated 1880 with the initials O.D.T. But I’m not sure what the AM.EX is. Please don’t say American Express. This Dime is Variety 4 resumed with weight standard of Variety 5.
Fun, I wouldn't read too far into it Wells Fargo was the only thing around to travel. I don't think it was till the 90's that a secondary service came along. https://www.wellsfargohistory.com/helping-san-francisco-rise-from-the-ashes-of-1906/
I can’t help but wonder, since it’s a love token if the AM.EX isn’t a place somewhere that had meaning to them.
Yeah, I can see that as a possibility. It could also be celebrating an event...Ex for exhibition, maybe, or something similar? Bruce
Another possibility just came to mind. The American Express company has been in business since about 1850, first as a express delivery service. It was only later that it got into financial services. It may not be a love token after all, but an ID badge or memento for O.D.T. That might explain the hole. I've seen counterstamped or engraved coins used as railroad badges before Bruce
