Ok, I was going too, but I was afraid that if it was a good deal then someone would bid over me

If you dont want to post your auction for everyone to see you might try sending a private message to one of the forum experts to take a look at it before you bid, Im sure they would be happy to give you some advice (I know Ive done it in the past).

The odds that someone on this forum is both collecting the same coins that you are interested in and willing to try and take a coin from underneath you are slim IMO. Plus great deals are not so easily found. Most everyone expects a premium and in an auction you only will pay slightly above what other people are willing to pay. LikeCoindude said just send a private message to some of the experts here or people you feel you can trust. I'm one of those who tends to trust anyone unless they do me wrong. Just don't send a private message to coindude08 he looks shady.. :D

Haha I wish I had money to bid on auctions like that but Ive spent most of my money on my proof kennedy collection.

I've been thinking of starting a Kennedy collection. Let me know what coins you are looking at and I'll tell you if its a good deal. ;)

I will give you a piece of advice, take it or leave it...

Return this coin. Find a nice problem free AU example if that is what you want and can afford. Problem coins will always be a problem, particularly when it comes time to sell them.

    Take care...Mike

I think you got a fair deal, just because it's not slabbed , has a few scrathes or didn't come from Heritage dosn't mean it's lost all value. After all it's gold.
I however do agree that buying pricier raw coins on E-bay is very risky and i personally don't go that route.
Mike a problem free coin like this is going to cost a heck of a lot more than $200,i think the kid did just fine.

I don't believe he's collecting half eagles by date, so therefore there are plenty of dates that should be both problem free as well as in his price range. With the recent run-up in gold prices he may have to save a few bucks more to get a nice AU example, but certianly not a "heck of a lot" more...Mike

Actually a quick search on the major auction sites and many MS60 coins go for $200-250 and most have fewer scratches and are slabbed. The AU58's look even better with hardly any scratches and only a hint of wear and $200 seems the norm for them , but Like surfer said if you want a problem free one it will cost you.

    Here's a nice one for 184:

    And one for 172:

I'm afraid a professional grading service would knock his down a few points even lower for that huge gash and the many nicks across the cheek and neck.

Don't get me wrong. Its nice coin with a few marks and a good luster to it. Even though the color looks off from that photo?, but you didn't pay too much of a premium for it so if you like the coin just keep it and enjoy it.

True, which is a little surprising since the mintage is only 615.900.Also the term problem free seems to be somewhat debatable. In my mind an AU-MS-60 coin isn't problem free since that grade would indicate slight ware, minor sratching , loss of luster or perhaps a weaker strike. When you start getting up to MS-63 grade on that coin prices start to push the $1000 range.
I don't doubt you guy's know what your talking about but i still think he got a decent price, most of the $5 libs
are listed at $185 in VF according to the Red Book.
And guy's i know the Red Book is high but still in the ballpark at least for that coin.BY the way bullion value for the gold content as of today would be just under $150$,which means he paid $ 50 for the collectable/numismatic value.
Again not arguing with anyone just pointing out the positive points.

Good points. That is a 1901-S with a mintage of 3,645 million , but you are right about the price of gold. Strange the price guide I'm looking at shows no difference in price between the two issues.. Does the redbook reflect a price difference?

Heritage, eh? I'm going to buy another half eagle, so I'll take all the advice I can get

I know this may sound stupid, but I don't like slabbed coins. Raw coins are cooler than slabbed imo

You don't have to buy it from Heritage. They are just a good site to look at the previous auctions coins and prices so you know what you are getting and how much you should pay. 2 coins graded the same are not always equal and the prices between them can vary tremendously. Do a search on that site for the coin and grade you are thinking of buying and it should help you make a more informed decision.

Ok I will. And now I feel down that half of my savings when to a "impaired" coin. Just like when I got the 1855-o half dollar that was cleaned :(

I know the feeling , but you shouldn't feel like that. Like Surfer pointed out you got your moneys worth in gold and value. Its actually a very nice looking coin. That scratch just kind of turns some people off. Don't worry I've spent more and got less before so I know the feeling. Just realize you like the coin and that you didn't get ripped off and don't get yourself down about it. You could always sell it on ebay as a MS64.. LOL

OK thanks, didn't see the s mint mark, oddly enough the RB indicates no difference in value
between the 1901p and1901s .Strange since the San Francisco 's mintage is about 5-6 times greater.
    Any theory's on why?

A few more pieces of advice...

Get your parents to take you to a coin show and look at as many of this coin as possible before choosing one.

If you can't get the above to work, only purchase from somewhere you have a return policy (example: Heritage auctions are not one, Heritage "buy now" are).

Whatever you choose, post the coin here for helpful advice.

    Take care...Mike
