I would not buy coins from Atocha Jewelry, if I were you. They sell cleaned, at'ed, and circ coins as BU. The one you posted looks like it has a very bad staple scratch. I would also not buy raw gold coins on ebay.

Great, thats what I just spend $203 on  It still looks cool to me, and I don't mind the scratch

    Leadfoot there is no spoon

As others have said, you should be wary of Atocha. I hope you got a return policy.

That being said, I grade the coin MS details, scratched, net AU...Mike

[edited to change grade -- I originally graded the coin MS 63, but I missed the scratch]

Go to Heritage auctions website and go over their previous auctions. look at the prices and pictures of the same date coin then use that to make a decision. There are a lot of pictures and its a great way to get a good look at a lot of different grades and prices.

I think it would grade a 63, but it does look scratched. However, for 203 dollars I think you did just fine.

Its worth 250 in MS60, and I don't mind the scratch. Its only my 2nd gold coin too (It go along nicely with my XF 1851 $2.5 liberty)

You paided a AU57-MS60 price so if you like the coin I say keep it. I somehow doubt even Atocha would let a $1200-$1300 MS63 coin go for 200.

AU57? Is that even a grade? And I got the coin because I thought it looked cool-I'm still a kid

If you like the coin by all means keep it. It is a nice looking coin. I don't personally see any wear on it and gold coins are the hardest to grade. I'm no expert just giving my opinion.

and yes AU 57 is a grade. Almost Uncirculated grades are from 50-59

The scratch is what kills the grade and the value IMHO...it would be net graded for it and the price would be lowed since few people would want it.....

Next time you are going to buy a larger $$ coin like this you might want to ask for suggestions before you buy it....not after.

May I also suggest if your going to spend this much money buy slabbed coins and not through Atocha. Like I said go to www.heritageauctions.com and create a free login. Going through the previous auctions and looking at the prices and pictures of a coin you are interested in gives you a great edge when making a similar purchase.

You really gain some good grading knowledge this way. Its also gives you a respect of why coins in the same grades can sometimes command hundreds more then another in the same grade. The difference between the two can be easily noticed and helps build an understanding of what features are more desirable in a series of coins and which one's are less desirable.

So it was a bad deal? And has nice luster and reflecting surfaces though

I certify that I am at least 18 years old:

    I'm not though...I'm only 12 :(

No it wasn't a bad deal...you got a coin that was priced right and graded right (without the NET grade)---the thing I was talking about is that when it comes time for you to sell it you are going to have a hard time selling a coin with the scatch <sp?> because most people will just wait around till they find one without the problem.
That is why I would suggest buying a no problem coin----now sometimes that isn't possible and when its not this type of coin is just as good then another one.
If you like it then keep it.....you didn't overpay.

Well do like Speedy suggested and post a link here for advice beforehand. Nobody will steal the coin out from underneath you and it may help you make a valuable purchasing decision.
