    Hi All

I would be very greatful if someone could give me a their thoughts on this saxon penny of coenwulf of Marcia. Although it has a bit of damage I think it is still a worth while coin for a collector who is looking for a genuine 1200 year old coin. I have decleared it to the UK Portable Antiquities Scheme where it has been registered and now returned to me. If anyone would like to see the full details you can visit the link below. I would like to know the grade and value if possible?

Very nice piece of history! I liked this as well:

"This is a find of note and has been designated: For inclusion in British Numismatic Journal ‘Coin Register’"

yours appears to be the most common coenwulf penny, a tribrach type penny. it is listed in my spink at £450 in fine condition, and £1250 in very fine condition. don't get too excited, spink values are usually higher than what a coin sells for.

great detail still showing, but with part of the flan missing, your coin would probably be worth closer to the fine estimate.

Thank you very much for your fast replies, gent's (or ladies?) I'm not clever enough to be a coin collector but always manage to find a few while out metal detecting here in the UK. This coin is not the oldest I have but I think it is the the rarest to date and even better than the 1867 Victoria half sovereign or the Edward the 2nd penny I found last year. There are way more roman coins in the ground here than saxon but they are never in as good condition unless they are silver or gold. anyway thanks again for your help
