Hello all from a confessed newbie. Last night I acquired my 1st coin that I didn't purchase directly from the US Mint. 2001-S ANAC PF-68 Sac Dollar from Heritage online only aution for $54 (incl BP and shipping). I think this was a great deal (but I'm a newbie). Those of you that are seasoned (salty, as we used to say in the Navy), please give me your brutally honest opinion.
    Thanks

(I'll include the photos as soon as I figure out how:desk: )

I am not one of the seasoned old dogs - but nice coin. Was the cost in line with what other auctions on Heritage were closing at. To me it looks like a reasonable deal from a couple I have seen on Ebay, but I do not really collect these.

For a 2001-S in a ANACS slab I think you got it at a normal price....if it was graded by NGC or PCGS then it would have gone for more.....but that is one reason why I watch for ANACS slabs sometimes ;)
I think all in all you got a good deal!!!

    Is that because ANACS overgrades?

Does ANACS overgrade, or just not recognized like PCGS?

If you ever really want to know what a coin is worth, take it to a coin dealer or a coin show. First pretend you want to sell it to see what you are offered. You also may want to pretend you know a lot about coins by quoting things like the grey sheet.
Sort of like selling or buying a car. The object is only really worth what someone will pay for it.
As to your coin, the price is OK but you'll have to keep it for a few years to make it a really good deal.

They just aren't recognized like PCGS....sometimes I think they undergrade...but lately they have been overgrading IMHO.

    Nice coin again!

Don't forget earlier ANACS coins are overgraded. Their standards have publically changed to market grading instead of their earlier technical grading.

    True---they have a trend going.....graded right/overgraded/graded right/and now overgrading IMHO!
